Hussain Leo
direttore d'orchestra

trained at Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Colin Metters. While at University, he worked with all the major orchestras and opera companies in Cambridge, and in addition, was the founding musical director of the Kettle's Yard Ensemble, which specialises in contemporary music. After university, he studied for three years with Colin Metters at the Royal Academy of Music, where he took part in masterclasses with, among others, George Hurst, Sir Colin Davis, Mark Wigglesworth and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Recently Leo has conducted the Academy Symphony Orchestra in the South Bank Kurtag Festival, a performance of British Youth Opera's production of Le Nozze di Figaro in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, and Britten's Serenade (with Richard Watkins) as a charity concert at the Academy, an evening of Baroque music at the St Jude's Proms, and the Ashover Festival in 2003 and 2004. In 2004 he was appointed Musical Director of the Newbury Choral Society, with whom he performs three times a year; concerts have included Bach’s St John Passion and Handel’s Messiah. He is the current Chief Conductor of the University of London Symphony Orchestra with whom he will tour Italy later this summer.

Equally at home in the opera pit as on the concert platform, Leo has for the last two years been closely involved with English Touring Opera’s Spring Tour, in 2004 conducting performances of Figaro, and this year conducting a production of The (Little) Magic Flute, and performances of Cosi fan Tutte and Donizetti’s Mary Queen of Scots. He spent the summer of 2004 conducting at the Batignano Festival in Italy, and later worked on Pelléas et Mélisande for Glyndebourne on Tour.

This season’s projects include his first Verdi opera, Falstaff, for the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, concerts with the Southbank Sinfonia, London Concertante, Tippett’s A Child of Our Time with Newbury Choral Society, La Cenerentola for Glyndebourne on Tour, Cosi fan Tutte at Opera Holland Park and assisting Sir Simon Rattle on Pelléas et Mélisande in Salzburg. Plans include performances of Rigoletto at Opera North and concerts throughout UK.
