Mike Ashman was born in Hertford and educated at Dover College and Magdalene College, Cambridge. He was Artistic Director of Opera Zuid from 2000-2004, Associate Producer at the Royal College of Music (later the Joint Royal Schools of Music) Opera School from 1988-1998, Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Royal Academy of Music Music-Theatre Course, Visiting Director in Music Theatre at the Banff Centre, Alberta, Canada from 1988-1990 and a Staff Director with both Welsh National Opera and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden between 1979 and 1986.
His recent directorial credits include Der fliegende Holländer, Jenùfa, Un Ballo in Maschera, Death in Venice, Le Nozze di Figaro and Cosi fan tutte (Opera Zuid), Norma (Opera Holland Park), Le Nozze di Figaro (Cincinatti Opera) and Carmen (Opera Cork). Previous productions include a vast repertoire encompassing the great 19th century popular classics, Den Norske Opera’s Ring Cycle, the works of such diverse composers as Britten, Janacek, Gilbert and Sullivan and Handel and a selection of contemporary works and premieres in opera houses including those of Copenhagen, Oslo, Paris, Halle, Dublin, Madrid, Banff and Tokyo.
A keen writer and linguist, Mike Ashman is well known for his contributions to many of our music journals, national newspapers, CD booklets and opera house programmes.
Current projects include La jolie fille de Perth for the Buxton Festival, Pierrot Lunaire at the Almeida Festival, Faust with New Zealand Opera and The Sound of Music in Waterford, Ireland.
