Denni Sayers is recognised as one of the leading operatic choreographers of her generation. Much of her early work was with Opera Northern Ireland with whom she was choreographer and assistant director on countless productions. For Opera North she choreographed Medea (Phyllida Lloyd), for Scottish Opera Maria Stuarda (Stefan Lazaridis) and New Israeli Opera Orfeo ed Euridice (Michael McCaffery).
More recent credits include Paul Bunyan and The Bartered Bride (The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden), Boris Godunov (English National Opera), Arshak 11 (San Francisco), Peter Grimes (Amsterdam), Boris Godunov and War and Peace (Bastille) Porgy and Bess (Washington), L’Amour des Trois Oranges (Sydney) The Little Prince (Houston, Milwaukee Boston and for BBC) and Of Mice and Men (Bregenz), all with Francesca Zambello and Parsifal (English National Opera, San Francisco and Chicago), Der fliegende Holländer (San Francisco), Eugene Onegin (Baden Baden), Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Zürich), Henze’s Boulevard Solitude (ROH and Genova), Fidelio (Salzburg and Lyon), Turandot (Amsterdam) and The Bartered Bride (Glyndebourne), all with Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Der Vögelhändler (Berlin) with Danny Slater, Sweeney Todd with Neil Armfield and Pirates of Penzance for Elijah Moshinsky (Chicago) and Ariadne auf Naxos and Don Carlos (Welsh National Opera) with Armfield.
Current projects include The Bassarids in Amsterdam (Peter Stein), The Bartered Bride and Cyrano de Bergerac at ROH, Salome in Chicago and a new musical, Rebecca in Vienna (Zambello) and Die Gezeichneten in Salzburg, Lohengrin in Baden Baden and a revival of Boulevard Solitude in Barcelona (Lehnhoff). Her credits as director include the revival of Of Mice and Men in Washington and new productions of Tosca in Toronto and West Side Story in Tel-Aviv.
