Garanca Elina
mezzosoprano

Elina Garanca is one of the most interesting young (25) mezzo-sopranos. Ms. Garanca was born in Riga, Latvia in a musical family. She entered to the Latvian Academy of Music in 1996, where she has studied singing with Professor Sergej Martinov. Since 1998 she also studied with professor Irina Gavrilovici in Vienna. Already in May 1998 Ms. Garanca was selected by the Latvian National Opera to sing the role of Giovanna Seymour in Donizetti's Anna Bolena in Bucharest and Athens. The same year Miss Garanca was engaged at the Südthüringisher Staatstheater in Meiningen, where she sang roles like The Third Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Prinz Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier) and Maddalena (Rigoletto). In summer 2000 Ms. Garanca made a role debut in the role of Rosina in the Barber of Seville at Sigulda Festival in Latvia and soon after she visited in this role also at the Latvia National Opera in Riga. Until summer 2002 she has a soloist engagement at the Frankfurt Opera, where her roles includes Rosina (Barbiere di Siviglia), Lola (Cavalleria rusticana), and Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel).

With her success in the 'the 4th International Mirjam Helin Singing Competition' (1st award) in 1999 and BBC 'Cardiff Singer of the World' Competition (finale place) in 2001 Ms. Garanca has woke a lot interest in the opera world. According Dame Joan Sutherland 'Miss Garanca has a superb voice and a natural born appearance of a diva' and Mr. Jaakko Ryhänen 'her voice belongs to the Stradivarius-class', Robert Tear said in Cardiff; 'She's amazingly developed in terms of voice and self-possession. The singing is sumptuous and the technique from Mozart to Rossini is fantastic. It was stunning singing; some of the best I've ever heard.'

Besides opera Ms Garanca's repertoire includes songs by Schubert, Brahms, Rachmaninov, De Falla, Berg, Respighi, Tosti and Sibelius and sacral works by Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Rossini.

The main Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat wrote:

'ENCHANTING DEBUTE ALBUM- There are makings of a star in Elina Garanca!!' and continued: 'E.G. has made a debut album which is extremely rare in it's kind.. The listener gets enchanted from the first moment. A great singer has appeared among us. 'only the debut album of Roberto Alagna, that made such a breathtaking impact in me.'... Garancas voice is one of the most beautiful and noble I have ever heard and might compete in it's beauty even the one of Olga Borodina. Garanca makes every tune of the arias of Cherubino sound as diamonds. The voice works as a dream. Legato and breath are all there and everything seems easy and natural.'@'And the voice serves also Rossini! The cavatina of Rosina 'Una voce poco fa' gets a good portion of the musical substance without needing to give up any of the clarity of the coloraturas in the superb interpretation of Garanca. Even the finishing aria of Cinderella Nacqui all'affanno goes effortlessly and glowingly. Borodina has got a serious rival in Garanca.'The arias from Bellini and Donizetti shows, that G. is also an interpreter of strong emotions and serious heroin. The noble generosity of the voice, without any staggering poses her a lot higher than even the popular Vesselina Kasarova. The aria of Charlotte from Massenet's Werther shows that she knows also her French and is a mature interpreter like Anne Sofie von Otter. ...
