Rolando Villazon began his musical studies in his native Mexico. In 1998 he became a member of the Pittsburgh Opera'sYoung Artists Program where he appeared in productions of I Capuleti ed I Montecchi, Lucia di Lammermoor and Samuel Barber's Vanessa, the latter directed by the legendary Regina Resnik. He subsequently entered the Merola Opera Program of the San Francisco Opera where he performed the role of Alfredo in La Traviata and also participated in master classes with Joan Sutherland. Villazon won the second prize in Placido Domingo's 1999 Operalia competition as well as the first prize for Zarzuela and the Prize of the Public.

Rolando Villazon made his European debut as Des Grieux in Manon in Genoa in March of 1999 and has in the space of the two years following that performance established himself as a very important international artist. He has made highly successful debuts at theaters including the Opera Bastille, Bavarian State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin,Teatro dell'Opera di Roma , Opera de Lyon, Opera de Nice, the New York City Opera and many others. He has been acclaimed for roles such as Rodolfo in La Boheme, Alfredo in La Traviata,Romeo in Romeo et Juliette and Macduff in Macbeth. In subsequent seasons Villazon will make his debuts with the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera, Covent Garden and San Francisco Opera.

In the autumn of 2001 Rolando Villazon will appear as Alfredo for his debut with the Los Angeles Opera under Placido Domingo. He will appear in this role at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as well where he will also be heard as Rodolfo, a role he later sings for his debut at the Hamburg State Opera. Villazon returns to Los Angeles as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi. Other engagements include Lucia di Lammemroor for the Pittsburgh Opera, Manon for the Teatro Verdi in Trieste and Romeo et Juliette in Oviedo. In the 2002/2003 season the artist will return to the Berlin State Opera for a new production of La Traviata under Daniel Barenboim as well as in a new production of Donzietti's L'Elisir D'Amore and a revival of La Boheme. The artist will sing his first performances of the title role in Gounod's Faust at the Oper Bastille and then makes his debut at the Glyndebourne Festival in a new production of La Boheme under Andrew Davis. He will debut at theTheatre Royale de La Monnaie in another new staging of Boheme conducted by Antonio Pappano. Future plans include his debut at Covent Garden in the title role of Les Contes D'Hoffmann. Rolando Villazon recently made his first recording ( TELDEC) , singing the Steersman in Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollaender under Daniel Barenboim.
