Montiel Maria José
mezzosoprano

Born in Madrid, Maria Josè Montiel graduated in singing at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Musica and specialised in Vienna under the guidance of Sena Jurinac and Olivera Myljakovic. She was the winner of several important competitions and prizes, such as the Lucrecia Arana, the Placido Domingo and Federico Romero ones.

In addition to her vast operatic repertoire, she maintains an active schedule of performances with orchestras and musical institutions throughout the world: from the French National Orchestra to the Metropolitan Art Space Orchestra, from Kennedy Center of Washington to the Salle Pleyel de Paris, from the Opéra de Montpellier to the Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla.

Her concert repertoire includes works by Boccherini, Mozart, Vivaldi, Händel, Rossini, Schubert, Fauré, Berlioz, Beethoven, as well as Spanish and Baroque compositions.

She regularly took part in recitals and galas around the world, sharing the stage with such prestigious singers as Placido Domingo, with whom she inaugurated the Teatro Avenida of Buenos Aires, as well as Alfredo Kraus and Montserrat Caballé. With them, she recently obtained great success performing at the Teatro Real in Madrid under the baton of Garcia Navarro.

On the operatic side, in past seasons she sang as Flora, Modistin, Contessa di Ceprano and Inés at the Wiener Staatsoper, as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte at the Palais Auesberg, the role of Marie in Die Verkaufte Braut by Smetana for the opening of Akzent Theatre in Vienna, of Micaela in Carmen at the Teatro Cervantes in Malaga, and the main role of La Vida breve at the Teatro de la Zarzuela of Madrid and in Sydney. With this last role, she inaugurated the Teatro Real in Madrid with Garcia Navarro.

In 1999 she returned to the Teatro Real in Madrid to perform Las Golondrinas, sang in a prestigious recital at the Opera of Budapest under the baton of Janos Kovacs, followed by concerts in Madrid and San Sebastian.

2000 brought her to Carnegie Hall in New York to portray the main role of La Vida Breve, obtaining outstanding success and enthusiastic approvals. The same year, she sang as Giulietta in Les contes d'Hoffmann in Massy and re-proposed La Vida Breve with the Symphonic Orchestra of Montreal and Charles Dutoit, followed by recitals in Madrid and Murcia and concerts at the Teatro de la Maestranza (works by Korngold) and in Parma (Verdi's Requiem).

Maria Josè Montiel has recently obtained a great success at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, singing Berlioz's Faust Szenen (under the baton of Jeffrey Tate) and Tancredi (Isaura); at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste in Les contes d'Hoffmann (Giulietta), with Daniel Oren; at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, with her interpretation of La Favorite.

She opened the current season taking part in a new production of Carmen (title role) at the Teatro Verdi di Pisa, in Livorno, Lucca and Rovigo, and, on the concert side, singing in Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Orchestra Sinfonica G. Verdi in Milan. Again with the Verdi Orchestra, she subsequently sang Verdi's Requiem, under the baton of Riccardo Chailly.

Forthcoming engagements include the portraying of Carmen at Bern Staattheater and at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste, and Luisa Fernanda (title-role) at the Teatro alla Scala. She will also take part in tours of the Orchestra Sinfonica G. Verdi di Milano to Tokyo (Verdi's Requiem) and Las Palmas (Rossini's Stabat Mater).

Her discography includes Cd recordings by Villalobos, Beethoven Barrios, Lorcai, Schubert, Ferrol.
