Born in Lisbon, he started his singing studies with Cristina de Castro. In 1984 he made his debut at the São Carlos Theatre in Lisbon as Masetto in Don Giovanni. In the same theatre he also performed as Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro, as Marcello in La Bohème, as Taddeo in L'italiana in Algeri, as Germont in La traviata, as Dandini and Alidoro in La cenerentola.

Winner of the «Toti del Monte» Voice Competition, in 1989 he sang as Leporello in Don Giovanni in Treviso and in Rovigo, role that he subsequently re-proposed at the Opéra du Rhin de Strasbourg and the Teatro Verdi di Trieste. After this he made his debut in Falstaff at the Teatro Comunale di Treviso under the baton of Peter Maag, in Rinaldo by Händel in a production staged by Pierluigi Pizzi in Lisbon, in Lo frate 'nnamorato by Pergolesi conducted by Riccardo Muti and staged by Roberto De Simone at the Teatro alla Scala.

Among his past engagements it is worth mentioning Gianni Schicchi and Un segreto d'importanza at the Opéra in Montecarlo, at the Schwetzingen Festival and in Treviso, Carmen (Escamillo) and Gianni Schicchi in Lisbon, Händel's Semele at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Manon Lescaut (Lescaut) in Trieste, Roméo e Juliette and La pietra del paragone (Macrobio) at the Martina Franca Festival. In 1993 he made his debuts at the Teatro alla Scala in Falstaff , and in Paris as Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, role subsequently re-proposed in Messina, Macerata and Zurich. He then performed in La rondine (Rambaldo) in Turin, in L'elisir d'amore in Macerata, in La Bohème and in Les comtes d'Hoffmann (Schlemil) at the Teatro alla Scala, in Candide in Lisbon, in Il turco in Italia (Poeta) at the Teatro alla Scala with Riccardo Chailly and in Trieste, in I turchi amanti (Zaccaria) in Città di Castello, and in Jerusalem (Conte di Toulouse) in Turin.

In the last seasons he sang in La Diana schernita in Ascoli, Otello (Montano) in Berlin, Salzburg and Turin under the baton of Claudio Abbado, Turandot (Ping) in Genoa, at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino with Zubin Mehta and on a tour in China, Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali (Mamma Agata), Don Giovanni (Leporello) and Roméo et Juliette in Turin, Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro de La Maestranza in Siviglia, La cenerentola in Novara and at the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, Don Pasquale (Malatesta) in Trieste, L?elisir d?amore alla Wiener Staatsoper, and has been invited again at the Salzburger Festspiele to perform in Don Giovanni as Masetto, role also performed in Lausanne.

In 1999 he portrayed Le nozze di Figaro in Messina, Turandot in Cagliari, at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and at the Teatro Comunale Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Don Pasquale (Dottor Malatesta) at the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv.

2000 season was marked by her performances of Lucia di Lammermoor (Lord Enrico Ashton) at the Teatro Sao Carlos in Lisbon, Le Jongleur de Notre Dame (Moine peintre) at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, L?italiana in Algeri at the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv and in Oviedo, followed by Don Giovanni in Tel Aviv, at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and in Frankfurt, La Bohème in Florence and Messina, and Turandot and La Traviata on a China tour of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. He has recently returned to Milan to perform in Oedipus Rex with the Orchestra Sinfonica G. Verdi and sung Le nozze di Figaro in Rome with the Festival Euro Mediterraneo.

He has just obtained great success singing as Dandini in La Cenerentola at the Teatro alla Scala, at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and at the Opernhaus in Zurich, and as Marcello in La Bohème at the Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin. He just sang as Leporello in the Don Giovanni's production at the Ruhr Triennale in Gelsenkirchen, and as Lescaut in the Manon Lescaut's production of the Teatro São Carlos in Lisbon.

Active also on the concert side, José Fardilha has sung in Rossini's Petite messe solennelle conducted by Michel Corboz, Beethoven?s 9th Symphony with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dimitri Kitaenko, Les Noces by Stravinskij, Puccini?s Messa di gloria, Carmina Burana (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome), Händel's Messiah (Venice).

His recordings include Il barbiere di Siviglia (Fiorello) for EMI and La passione di Gesù Cristo for Radio Lugano.

Josè Fardilha will soon sing as Capulet in Roméo et Juliette in Munich with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester, under the baton of Carignani, and Gianni Schicchi at the Opéra National de Paris.
