Italian tenor Marcello Giordani returned to the Metropolitan Opera in Central Park for Boheme in June. He had just appeared in Paris in Boheme. Just prior he performed in Bologna's Attila and debuted in Genève's new Lucia. He performed in the Metropolitan Opera's new production of La Traviata. Earlier he was seen in Zurich's new Attila and Washington's Simon Boccanegra. Last summer saw him in La Scala's Lucrezia Borgia at the Opera National de Paris in June for Manon and making the first studio recording of Verdi's Jerúsalem for Philips. He also performed Puritani and La Boheme in Vienna as well as a series of recitals in Japan and the United States. Earlier in 1998 he debuted in Zurich in Lucia and performed the season-opening Romeo for the Teatro Massimo, Palermo, after having just performed this role for the Washington Opera. Last fall he triumphed in the Metropolitan Opera's Manon sung with "EMOTIONAL ARDOR..AND EXQUISITE REFINEMENT". He appeared on the Richard Tucker Gala, telecast throughout the United States. 1997 saw him perform in M0 Solti's last staged opera at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden in Simon Boccanegra; in Vienna's Traviata, La Boheme; Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera (including the broadcast), the Dallas Opera L'Elisir, and Faust at the Paris Opera. Debuts in the past six years have included the Royal Opera, Covent Garden Traviata (M0 Solti), the Metropolitan Opera as Nemorino in L'Elisir d'Amore, Opera de Paris as Faust, Hamburg, München and La Fenice, Venezia in La Traviata, the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Lucia and his Vienna Staatsoper debut as the Italian tenor in Der Rosenkavalier. He made his Avery Fisher Hall debut in 1991 on Live from Lincoln Center with Pavarotti. His acclaimed American debut in 1988-89 was as Nadir in Portland Opera's Les Pêcheurs de Perles. He debuted at La Scala in La Boheme in 1988 and made his professional stage debut as the Duke in Spoleto's Rigoletto in 1986. Other early career appearances by this Sicilian tenor have included: Tokyo and Seattle as Pinkerton, Spoleto USA debut as Arturo in Bellini's La Straniera, the Bilbao Festival in Spain for Pinkerton and Alfredo, Toulon Pinkertons, Houston Grand Opera as the Duke in Rigoletto and Pinkerton in Butterfly, Trieste Nemorino, Pinkerton at Canadian Opera, Edgardo in Lucia in the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Philadelphia Rigolettos and Portland's La Favorita. He debuted at the Arena di Verona as the Duke in their opening Rigoletto in 1991. He has also performed Tonio in La Fille du Regiment in Portland and the Rossini Stabat Mater in Pesaro. Additional career highlights include Hamburg's new Rigoletto, San Francisco's Lucia, Portland's Hoffmann, Bilbao's Puritani, Houston's Romeo and performances as Rodolfo in La Boheme in: Hamburg, the Metropolitan, San Francisco, Detroit, Costa Mesa, and Macerata's Attila. July 1999 has his debut with the München Philharmoniker in La Damnation de Faust conducted by James Levine followed by more Damnations for the Orchestre de Lyon and the RICHARD TUCKER GALA in Firenze, to be televised in Europe. On the agenda for '99-2000 is his portrayal of Rauol in Les Huguenots for the opening of the new opera house in Bilbao, La Favorite for the San Francisco Opera, the Verdi Requiem with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Lucrezia Borgia in Carnegie Hall (w/Renée Fleming) and returns to the Met Opera and Vienna and recitals in the U.S.
