Italian born in the country of Chieti, he studied composition and conducting at the Verdi Conservatoire in Milan. During 1976 he has been finalist (the second) at the International Competition "Gino Marinuzzi", was admitted at the specialization course of Maestro Franco Ferrara in Siena, and won the prize "Ottorino Respighi" of the Cini Foundation in Venice. In 1978 he won the bronze medal "Ernst Ansermet" of Genève. During this year he was also called by Claudio Abbado for preparing the Orchestra of La Scala in Milan, where he had then his debut with two symphonic concerts of Schonberg and Stravinsky. In 1980 he wins the "Cantelli" international award: after that an intense activity follows, including Verdi's "Requiem" in Salzburg, Schumann's "Manfred" at La Scala (the recording of the latter won the IX prize of italian Record Reviewers) and performances with London Philarmonic, American Symphony, R.I.A.S. in Berlin, Santa Cecilia Academy etc. Impressive is the activity as an opera conductor, having opened various Opera Houses like Verona's Arena (in 1981 with "Rigoletto"), Florence's Teatro Comunale (with "Il duca d'Alba"), Rossini Opera Festival (with "Italiana in Algeri"), Paris' Theatre du Chatelet (in 1982 with "Macbeth"), or Luxor's Arena tour with the first "Aida" in that place. As well as this, the various presences in the world's main Opera Houses, like Paris' Opera, London's Covent Garden, Grand Theatre de Genève, Munich Staatsoper, Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Opera of New York, Chicago's Lyric Opera, San Francisco Opera, Dallas Opera, Michigan Opera of Detroit, Buenos Aires' Colon, Toulouse's Capitole, Opera de Lyon, Glyndebourne Festival, Tokyo halls. In Italy, as well as La Scala, he conducted in Venice, Naples, Rome, Palermo, Genoa, Turin, Parma, Verona, Catania, Macerata, Treviso, Modena, Trieste. The repertoire of the operas he conducted is also impressive: among them are "Jerusalem", "Donna del lago", "Traviata", "C enerentol a", "Vespri siciliani", "Ballo in maschera", "Don Giovanni", "Lucia di Lammermoor", "Turco in Italia", "Ernani", "Capuleti e Montecchi", "Bianca e Falliero", "Don Carlo", "I figenia", "Tancredi", "El isir", "Signor Bruschino", "Nozze di Figaro", "Boheme", "Sonnambula", "Don Pasquale", "Italiana in Algeri", "Manon Lescaut", "Rondine", "Semiramide", Rossini's "Otello", "I quatro rusteghi", "Le comte Ory", "La fille du Regiment", "Faust". From 1987 to 1992 he has been Main conductor of the Orchestra della Toscana, with whom he recorded two CD's with rare Cherubini and Schubert scores. In 1994 he has been promoted as Main conductor of the Bergamo Orchestra, in 1995 of the Macerata one and from 1996 he is Artistic manager of Treviso's Teatro Comunale. Among his next recent engagements are "The barber of Seville" in Genoa and Seville, "Falstaff' in Macerata, "L'amico Fritz" in Catania, as well as symphonic concerts.
