Ganassi Sonia
mezzosoprano

Sonia Ganassi was born in Reggio Emilia, Italy. She had singing lessons with Alain Billard and in 1990 won the competition A. Belli in Spoleto. She made her dedut two years later at the Opera di Roma, where she launched the opera season there in the role of Rosina in Barbiere di Siviglia. Since then she has been invited to perform in some of the most prestigious theatres in the world including: the Comunale in Florence, the Comunale in Bologna, the Metropolitan in New York, the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, L'Opéra in Paris, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and La Scala in Milan. Sonia Ganassi's repertoire is vast and includes many roles from operas by Rossini such as Rosina, conduced by Claudio Abbado in Ferrara, at the Rossini Opera Festival and again more recently at La Scala with Riccardo Chailly. Her repertoire also includes Cenerentola, Isabella in L'Italiana in Algeri, Emma in Zelmira and Sigismondo in its the firs modern performance, conduced by R. Bonynge. Rossini is certainly not the only composer suited to this versatile singer. Sonia Ganassi has also interpreted the roles of Adalgisa in Norma (at Carnegie Hall in New York and more recently at the Orange Festival and at Opera Bastille) as well as Romeo in Capuleti e Montecchi, Jane Seymour in Anna Bolena, Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Maffio Orsini in Lucrezia Borgia and Nicklausse in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, (these last two roles both at La Scala). In the 1998-99 season Sonia made her debut in three very important roles: Zaida in Dom Sebastien by Donizetti which was the first performance of the 98-99 season at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and was conduced by Daniele Gatti. For this role the Italian critics awarded her the Abbati prize. The second role was Charlotte in Werther and the third was Leonore in La Favourite at the Opera House in San Francisco. This performance generated a great deal of praise both from the critics and the general public. Recently Sonia Ganassi has been the protagonist of a new production of Cenerentola at the Covent Garden in London (Jenuary 2001) and still with Cenerentola she had a great success at La Scala (July 2001).Sonia Ganassi's concert performances are also numerous. The most important are Pulcinella by Stravinsky at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, conduced by Semyon Bichkov, the Oratorio Juditha Triumphans by Vivaldi performed with the Solisti Veneti at the Scala and at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, Lieder Etnes Farhenden Gesellen by Mahler and Alben Berg's Fruhe Lieders conduced by Riccardo Chailly. We must not forget to mention her performance in Stabat Mater by Rossini at the Concertegebown in Amsterdam and the Avery Fisher Hall in New York with Riccardo Chailly and also at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with M.W. Chung. With Rossini's Stabat Mater conduced by Riccardo Muti, she was in September 2001 in tournée with la Scala in the Eastern Countries.
