Balázs Kocsár studied composition at the Bartók Conservatory, Budapest, than choral conducting and orchestral conducting at the Liszt Academy, in which he graduated with full marks in 1991. He took part in Master classes with Helmuth Rilling, Péter Eötvös and Jorma Panula. In 1991/2 the Hochschule für Musik and Darstellende Kunst, Wien, awarded him a scholarship to study with Karl Österreicher.

In 1989 he was one of the winners of Hungarian Television's 6th International Conductors competition and in November 1995 he won the Franco Ferrara International Conductors Competition organised by the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.

Conductor of the Opera House of Szeged from 1990 to 1993, from 1991 to 1994 he was Assistant Conductor of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra. Since 1992 he has worked regularly in the Hungarian State Opera House of Budapest first as guest conductor then from 1997 as permanent conductor. From 1993 to 1999 he was the General Music Director of the Debrecen Opera House, and form 1999 to 2002 he was appointed Erster Kappelmeister at Frankfurt Opera House.

Since his debuts, Balazs Kocsar has worked intensively both in the operatic and concert fields. He was on the podium of such Italian orchestras as the Orchestra Sinfonica G. Verdi and I Pomeriggi Musicali of Milan, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma Orchestra, the Arena di Verona, the Teatro Verdi di Trieste and the La Fenice di Venezia orchestras and, more recently, at the Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto, in Cividale and with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana. Abroad, he conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders, the Frankfurter Museumsorchester, the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the Hungarian State Philharmonic Orchestra, Vlaamse Opera Orchestra, Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie, Chemnitz.

On the operatic side, his repertoire include the most important works by Mozart (Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, Die Zauberflöte, La clemenza di Tito, Don Giovanni), Verdi (Rigoletto, Il trovatore, Un ballo in maschera, Simon Boccanegra, Aida, Falstaff, La traviata, Nabucco), Puccini (Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Il Tabarro, Gianni Schicchi, La Bohème), Rossini (Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola, Manon Lescaut) and Mascagni (L'amico Fritz, Cavalleria Rusticana), successfully led in prestigious theatrical institutions, such as the Oper Frankfurt, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Stadttheater Chemnitz, the Staatstheater of Budapest, the Opera in Debrecen and the Szeged Opera.

He has recently taken part in new productions of Bluebeard's Castle, Otello, Tannhäuser and Lohengrin at the Staatsoper of Budapest.

Highlights of his future engagements include Prokofiev?s The love for Three Oranges at the Vlamse Opera in Antwerpen and a concert in Milan with I Pomeriggi Musicali.

He has recorded on the Hungaroton label.
