The opera and theater director Karoline Gruber was born in Styria, near Graz and currently resides in Berlin. She completed her studies in drama, musicology, art history and philosophy at the University of Vienna. She worked as directing assistant at the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, which included work with Maximilian Schell and Götz Friedrich. She also worked with Achim Freyer, Harry Kupfer, Peter Zadek, Ruth Berghaus and Herbert Wernicke in Berlin, Stuttgart, Basel and Vienna.

After her first sucessful productions, for example in Basel and Bremen she was appointed OBERSPIELLEITERIN at the Linzer Landestheater where she produced Puccini's Il Trittico, Verdi's La Traviata and Siegfried Matthus' Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph von Rilke from 1994-96. Concurrently she woked on Puccini's La Bohéme in Klagenfurt as well as Verdi's Rigoletto at the Stadttheater Gießen. After her internationally acclaimed production of Lohengrin in 1997 at the Städtischen Bühnen Augsburg she was appointed Head Stage Director at the Staatstheater Kassel.

There she staged Puccini's La Bohéme and Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera. In addition she spent some time at the Wiener Kammeroper and produced Cavalli's La Calisto and additionally produced Mozart's La Clemnza di Tito at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt. Following these engagements she staged Offenbach's Hoffmann's Erzählungen at the Landestheater Linz and Donizetti's Don Pasquale at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken. This production earned a nomination for "Best Director/Best Production" in the "Opernwelt" yearbook of 2000.

She arranged the "Klangkörper Schweitz (Sound-body Switzerland)," the Swiss Pavillion with the architect Peter Zumthor for the World Exhibition EXPO 2000. At the beginning of the second semester 2000, Karoline Gruber began teaching directing at the Hochschule Musik Würzburg. Later, in the summer of 2002, she began teaching at Opernwerkstatt Schloss Laubach.

Her staging of Il Mondo della Luna, conducted by Rene Jacobs at the Innsbrucker Festwochen 2001 was an overwhelming success both among the public and critics. The production, coproduced with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, had its successful Berlin debut on July 2, 2002. After Innsbruck she made her much-celebrated debut in France at the Opéra de Nantes with Bizet's Carmen. Following this, she staged Smetana's The Bartered Bride at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken.

In February 2003 her staging of Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea opened to much critical acclaim at the Hamburgischen Staatsoper. In the coming year she will stage Verdi's Nabucco(premiere 1/25/04). Her staging of Aderhold's opera Martin Luther will open just before this (premiere 9/14/03) at the newly renovated Opernhaus Erfurt. She will make her debut at the Oper Bonn in 2004 with Rameau's Dardanus(premiere 2/25/04) and at the Sächsischen Staatsoper Dresden in 2005 with Hass' Cleofide(premiere 3/26/05).
