In the 1997/8 season Monica Colonna was heard in the role of Adina in L'elisir d'amore opposite Luciano Pavarotti at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, followed by Rigoletto (Gilda) at the Teatro Comunale di Modena, in Reggio Emilia and Ferrara, and Don Giovanni (Donna Anna) in Köln, in a co-production with As.Li.Co. She was also acclaimed in the role of Donna Anna in the new Peter Brook production of Mozart's Don Giovanni conducted by Claudio Abbado at the Aix-en-Provence Festival: this production has also toured France, Italy, Belgium and Japan during the 1998/9 season. In 1996 Monica Colonna made her international debut as the protagonist of La parisina at the Wexford Opera Festival, where she was immediately re-invited as the protagonist of Mercadante's Elena da Feltre, which she recorded for Naxos-Marco Polo. She has recently revisited this role in Lugo.

Monica Colonna also appeared as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, at the @Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, at the San Francisco Opera, New Israeli Opera di Tel Aviv and at the Opéra@de Nice, as Lucia in The Rape of Lucretia in a production of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and at the Teatro Comunale del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino with the direction of Daniele Abbado, as Gilda in Rigoletto at the Théâtre Municipal de Lausanne, as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte at the Michigan Opera in Detroit and as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni at the Scottish Opera in Glasgow. She has recently successfully premièred the role of Contessa d'Almaviva in a Teatro Verdi di Pisa production of Le nozze di Figaro, with performances in Pisa, Prato and Siena, and debuted as Adalgisa in Norma at the Minnesota Opera in Minneapolis. She also performed in a concert tour with Luciano Pavarotti in Hannover and Helsinki (1997), Köln (1998) and Montecarlo (1999). She has been recently heard in concert at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.

Highlights of Monica Colonna's future engagements include, among others, Così fan tutte (Fiordiligi) in Ferrara and on a tour to Spain and Cuba, Le nozze di Figaro (Contessa d'Almaviva) at the Teatro Regio di Torino, Agrippina (title role) at the Chicago Opera Theater, Don Giovanni (Donna Anna) in Trento, Bolzano, Rovigo and Cosenza.

In 1995 Monica Colonna was among the winners of the «Luciano Pavarotti - International Voice Competition» of Philadelphia and was the first prize winner of the international competition organised by the Teatro Comunale di Modena for the production of L'elisir d'amore, in which she was invited to perform the role of Adina. In 1996 Monica Colonna sang in Nino Rota's La notte di un nevrastenico staged by Piera Degli Esposti in Cosenza and Foggia and the role of Bellina in Cimarosa's Le astuzie femminili in Ferrara.

She won the «Giacomo Lauri Volpi» prize in 1993 and the «Adriano Belli» competition in 1994. In the same year @and in 1995 she made her debut at the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto in L'elisir d'amore (Adina), followed by Piccinni's La bella verità (Petronilla) in which she was also heard at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze. She has also sung the roles of Mimì in La Bohème and of Carolina in Il matrimonio segreto at the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto, working with such directors as Ugo Gregoretti and Luca Ronconi.
