| Born in Paris, he was engaged by Opéra du Rhin as an assistant director in 1973 and made his debut as a director in 1979 with 'Der Ring des Nibelungen'. He has since worked at many of the world's leading opera houses, and since 1990 he has been Artistic Director of the Théâtre du Capitole, Toulouse. His first production for The Royal Opera was 'Roméo et Juliette' (1994). His recent word has included 'Hamlet' (Turin), 'Das Rheingold', 'Mignon', 'Otello', 'Manon', 'Tosca', 'Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg' (Toulouse), 'Aida', 'Elektra' (Seville) and 'Samson et Dalila' (Houston Grand Opera). He has twice received the Prix de la Critique Dramatique et Musicale, and in 1998 he was named a Chevalier de l'Ordre du Mérite. Among his plans are 'Falstaff', 'Siegfried', 'Götterdämmerung'(Toulouse), 'Roméo et Juliette', 'Otello' (Orange Festival) and 'Aida' (Chicago). |
