Heusel David T.
direttore d'orchestra

The american-born conductor, David T. Heusel is Musical Director of the Sakai City Opera in Osaka, Japan. Since 1995 he has collaborated on six new productions in Sakai, most recently on « Don Carlo » in September 2002. In addition since 1994 Heusel has been a regular guest conductor with Opera Ireland in Dublin, Ireland, for whom he has conducted eight opera productions since 1994. In 2001 his « Madama Butterfly » there received international recognition in Opéra International as « a very beautiful rendition of the score. » (Michel Lambert. ) In Dublin Heusel has also conducted numerous concerts and live radio broadcasts with the RTE Concert Orchestra. Heusel is also a regular guest at l'Opéra de Nice, France, where he has been heard in a symphony concert, Prokofiew's « Romeo and Juliet » and « Cinderella », as well as « The Nutcracker. »

In January 2003 Heusel made his debut at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen with « Rigoletto » and in Aalborg conducting an opera gala concert. Other international engagements have included « La duchessa di Chicago » in Trieste (2003), « Le Revenant » in Madrid and Toulouse (2000 and 2003), « La fille du régiment » in Geneva (1998), which was broadcast live on swiss television, as well as concert work in Stockholm, Sweden.

David T. Heusel has worked in Germany as guest conductor in Dortmund (1997) and Halle (2000), in both cases successfully collaborating with choreographer and stage director, Ralf Rossa, on new productions of « La fille mal gardée » and « Giselle. » Opernhaus Halle invited Heusel to lead the Pet Halmen production of « La clemenza di Tito » for the 200th anniversary of the Goethe-Theater in Bad Lauchstädt.

David T. Heusel began his work in opera at an early age: as a teen-ager he was involved as vocal coach, chorus singer and orchestra musician with the Whitewater Opera Company in Richmond, Indiana, where he was also Assistant Musical Director from 1978-1980. Heusel spent nine years (1981-1990) in Germany as a vocal coach, head of musical staff and conductor in Oberhausen, Kiel and Dortmund. From 1990-1994 he was Assistant Musical Director of the l'Opéra de Nice, France, where he added concert work, as well as French opera to his already broad repertoire. From 1995-1997 Heusel was Musical Director of the Opéra Comique in Paris, France, where he conducted « Mireille », « La Bohème », « Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor » and « Carmen » to critical acclaim.

In the 1990's David T. Heusel was Musical Assistant for the famed Bayreuther Festspiele, working with James Levine and Guiseppe Sinopoli and at the Paris Opera for productions of « Elektra » and « Parsifal » conducted respectively by Micheal Schønwandt and Armin Jordan.

Heusel's upcoming engagements include the New Year's Concert at the Volkstheater Rostock, Alcina in Perm, Russia, and Les contes d'Hoffmann at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland.
