| Richard Bernstein begins his 2002-03 season with the title role in Mozart's delightful Le nozze di Figaro with the Atlanta Opera (September). The clever and resourceful valet has become his signature part, and he has performed it to tremendous acclaim throughout the United States and in Europe. Subsequently, in a pair of contrasting roles, the majority of Mr. Bernstein's season is spent with the Metropolitan Opera, where he has appeared every year since his October 1995 debut. First he portrays Marco, the recently arrived, illegal immigrant, in the Met premiere of William Bolcom's operatic adaptation of Arthur Miller's A View From the Bridge (December). Next he plays the philosopher Colline in La bohème (February - May). The bass-baritone's season ends in the Colorado Rockies, when he essays a new role, Mustafa, in the Central City Opera production of L'Italiana in Algeri (June - August). |
| In the 2001-02 season Mr. Bernstein was first heard in the Beethoven Ninth Symphony with the Charlotte (NC) Symphony Orchestra, quickly followed by his Dallas Opera debut in the world premiere of Tobias Picker's Thérèse Raquin, where he sang Laurent, a role created with his formidable vocal and dramatic abilities in mind. The Chandos live recording of this work was released this past June. The beginning of 2002 found Mr. Bernstein back in familiar territory, at the Metropolitan Opera portraying Cesare Angelotti in Tosca. Thereafter, the bass-baritone concentrated on Don Giovanni, first performing Leporello with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, then, as Masetto, in a Seiji Ozawa-led tour of Japan. (In addition to these two roles, the versatile artist also has sung the title part with great success). He concluded his season with a new role, Sancho Panza, in Massenet's Don Quichotte at Vienna's Klangbogen Festival, which also marked his first performances in Austria. |
| In past seasons, Mr. Bernstein has appeared in North America with the opera companies of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Michigan, Cincinnati, Palm Beach and Vancouver, as well as at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera Pacific and Wolf Trap. His European operatic performances have taken him to Germany (Bayerische Staatsoper), Spain (Valencia and Mallorca) and Italy (Oderzo). Additionally, Mr. Bernstein has collaborated with a host of major American symphony orchestras and has also appeared at prestigious Festivals here and abroad. These include the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago, San Francisco and National Symphonies, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Choral Society, as well as at the Lincoln Center, Ravinia, Spoleto and Aspen Festivals and abroad in Israel, Japan, Germany and Finland. |
| Born and raised in New York, Mr. Bernstein moved West to pursue his musical studies at the University of Southern California. Upon graduation, he was invited to join the Los Angeles Opera Resident Artist program, where he honed his craft for five seasons. |
