| American Bass-Baritone Max Wittges has made an international reputation for his powerful and moving interpretations of many of the Richard Wagner Helden-bariton roles, most notably Wotan/Wanderer in Der Ring des Niebilungen and Amfortas in Parsifal. |
| After completeing his studies with Boris Goldovsky at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia Max Wittges made his debut with the New York City Opera as the Bonze in Madama Butterfly (Puccini) and Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana (Mascagni) he also sang the roles of Monterone in Rigoletto (Verdi) and Zuniga in Carmen (Bizet). |
| Since his New York debut his roles have included the Flying Dutchman in Der Fliegender Holländer (Wagner) at the Minnesota Opera, Amfortas in Parsifal (Wagner) for Opera de Normandie (Rouen and Caen, France) and Opera de Nice (Nice, France), the Musiklehrer in Ariadne uaf Naxos (Strauss) also for Opera de Nice, the First Nazerene in Salome (Strauss) for Opera du Rhin (Strasbourg, France), Scarpia in Tosca (Puccini) and Don Fernando in Fidelio (Beethoven) for Opera Ireland (Dublin, Ireland) , Donner, Gunther as well as Wotan/Der Wanderer (2nd cast) in Der Ring des Niebelungen at Seattle Opera, Wotan in Der Ring des Niebelungen (Wagner) in a staged excerpt evening with the Reykjavik Arts Festival (Iceland), a concert performance as the Commandant in Friedenstag (Strauss) with the KRO Radio Orchestra (Holland) and a Carnegie Hall performance in the role of Stromminger in La Wally (Catalani) with the Opera Orchestra of New York.. |
| Mr. Wittges made his German debut in the title role of Macbeth (Verdi) for the Niedersächische Staatsoper, Hannover, where he was also heard as Lt. Ratcliffe in Billy Budd (Britten) and Don Fernando in Fidelio (Beethoven) as well as the Sprecher in Zauberflöte (Mozart). Having recorded and performed Wotan's Abschied from Die Walküre (Wagner) with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra in Luxembourg in 1995, Max accepted the roles of Wotan and Der Wanderer in a new Wagner Ring with the Opera der Bundesstadt Bonn as well as Wotan in a production of Die Walküre at the Theresa Carena Theater in Caracas, Venezuela. |
| In the 1999 - 2000 season Mr. Wittges interpreted the role of Wotan in Die Walküre to great critical acclaim, and Dreieinigkeits Moses in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (Weill) for the Staatstheater Braunschweig as well as Salomon in Die Königin von Saba (Goldmark) at the Wexford Festival, Ireland. In the following season he as invited to sing Der Wanderer in Siegfried (Wagner) for the Staatstheater Braunschweig and debuted in the role of Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde for the Saarländisches Staatstheater, Saarbrücken. |
| Mr. Wittges has also performed extensively on the concert stage. His many concerts include Performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC of A Sea Symphony (Vaughn Williams), Dona Nobis Pacem (Vaughan Williams), Death of the Bishop of Brindisi (Menotti) and Die Schöpfung (Haydn) with the Washington Choral Arts Society and the National Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Wittges has sung the role of Christus in the Matthew Passion (Bach) with the Washington Bach Consort and the baritone role in Belshazzar's Feast (Walton) with and the National Cathedral Choral Society (Washington DC) together with the Washington Bach Consort. Mr. Wittges was heard in the world premiere of Simon Sargon's 1st Symphony with the Houston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Eduard Mata and the Haydn Harmonie Messe with the Van Cleiburn Foundation in Fort Worth, TX. He has also sung the role of Christus in the Matthew Passion (Bach) and the bass role in the B-minor Mass (Bach) at the Theater Municipal in Santiago de Chile and the role of Christus and the bass arias in the St. John Passion with the Toscanini Orchestra in Parma, Italy. With the Solist European Luxembourg Max Wittges has sung the bass role in Die Schöpfung, the 9th Symphony of Beethoven, and Cantatas 56 and 82 of J.S. Bach. |
| Upcoming engagements for Mr. Wittges include performances as Wotan/Wanderer in a complete Wagner Ring Cycle at the Staatstheater Braunschweig in November-December 2001 and Boris in Boris Godunov in the same theatre in 2003. He will also sing the Don Pizarro of Fidelio in Staatstheater Wiesbaben in March 2002. |
