Donato Di Stefano is the winner of various international vocal competitions including the «Giuseppe Verdi » Competition in Parma, the As.Li.Co. in Milan and the « Mario del Monaco» in Castelfranco Veneto. He made his debut in 1989 in Rome, singing the role of Zaccaria in Nabucco.

He has worked with Salvatore Accardo, Bruno Campanella, Riccardo Chailly, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Gustav Kuhn, Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti, as well as the stage directors Luc Bondy, Dario Fo, Ferruccio Soleri and Bob Wilson in principal Italian and international theatres such as the Teatro alla Scala, the Teatro Comunale di Firenze, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Teatro dell?Opera di Roma , the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli , the Teatro Bellini di Catania, the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the Teatro Regio di Parma, the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia , the Rossini Opera Festival of Pesaro, the Festival dei Due Mondi of Spoleto, the Opéra of Montecarlo, the Schwetzingen Festival as well as the theatres of Toronto, Zurich, Detroit, Frankfurt and Bilbao.

His huge repertoire includes Norma (Oroveso), Die Zauberflöte (Sarastro), La Bohème (Colline), La serva padrona (Uberto), L?elisir d?amore (Dulcamara), Gianni Schicchi (Simone), Il turco in Italia (Selim), L'italiana in Algeri (Mustafà), I quattro rusteghi (Lunardo), Le Comte Ory (Tuteur), Rigoletto (Sparafucile), Don Giovanni (Commendatore), Don Pasquale (title role), Le nozze di Figaro (Don Bartolo), Il barbiere di Siviglia (Don Basilio), Linda di Chamounix (Prefetto), La Cenerentola (Alidoro), and Rossini's Petite messe solemnelle, Stabat Mater and Messa di Gloria.

His most important performances include the world première of Hanjo (the protagonist) by Marcello Panni produced by Bob Wilson at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and at the Opéra Municipal de Lille, Le nozze di Figaro (Bartolo) in Salzburg conducted by Nicolaus Harnoncourt and staged by Luc Bondy, Gianni Schicchi (Simone) at the Teatro alla Scala conduced by Stefano Ranzani, L'italiana in Algeri (Mustafa') at the Rossini Opera Festival and at the Deutsche Oper of Berlin, La serva padrona (Uberto) at the Théâtre la Monnaie de Brussels conducted by Sigiswald Kuijken, Il turco in Italia (Don Geronio) at the Teatro alla Scala with Riccardo Chailly and L'elisir d'amore (Dulcamara) at the New Israeli Opera and at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze.

In 1998 he performed the role of Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Marc'Antonio in Soliva's Giulio e Sesto Pompeo at the Radio Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola in Tenerife, La serva padrona in Jesi, Rossini?s Messa di Gloria in Valencia.

In 1999 he sang Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, at the Michigan Opera Theatre in Detroit and in Piacenza, Don Pasquale at the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv.

2000 bought him to Brussels for a new production of La Cenerentola (Don Magnifico), to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in

Berlin and Messina for Il barbiere di Siviglia (Don Bartolo), to the Seiji Ozawa Ongaku-Juku Opera Project to sing as Don Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro (Don Bartolo). In the same year he sang L'elisir d'amore (Dulcamara) on a tour with the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv and at the Scottish Opera in Glasgow.

In 2001 he made his debuts at Welsh National Opera in Cardiff with Le nozze di Figaro and at the Teatro Real in Madrid with La Cenerentola. He also returned to the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv to sing again as Don Magnifico and performed in Il Campiello at the Japan Opera Foundation di Tokyo and Le nozze di Figaro at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia and at Teatro Real in Madrid. More recently, Donato Di Stefano successfully sang in Don Pasquale at the Florida Grand Opera of Miami and at the Michigan Theatre of Detroit, and in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Staatsoper unter den Linden of Berlin.

His future engagements include Gianni Schicchi at the Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto and at the Opéra National de Paris, Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Oper Frankfurt, and Le nozze di Figaro at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze.

Donato Di Stefano's discography includes two recordings of La serva padrona, with La Petite Bande conducted by Sigiswald Kuijken for Accent Live and led by Gustav Kuhn for Ricordi-Bmg. A broadcasting production of the same title for Rai International will also release in a video recording. He also recorded Le nozze di Figaro (Don Bartolo) for Naxos, La traviata with Zubin Mehta for Philips, Rendine's Un segreto di importanza for Ricordi, Linda di Chamounix for Frequenz and Soliva's Giulio e Sesto Pompeo for the Radio Svizzera Italiana label.

Donato Di Stefano was nominated for «Dora Mavor Moore Award» 1998/9 (Oustanding Perfomance by a Male in a Principal Role-Musical) for his performances as Don Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia in Toronto.
