Simon Keenlyside was born in London, studied zoology at Cambridge and singing with John Cameron at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He made his operatic debut at the Hamburg State Opera as Count Almaviva ('Le Nozze di Figaro'). He has since then sung in Geneva (Hamlet and Pelleas), San Francisco (Pelleas), Sydney (Figaro), Berlin (Figaro), Brussels (Orfeo), Paris (Papageno, Guglielmo, Yeletsky and Dandini), Vienna (Figaro und Marcello), Munich (Marcello), at the Metropolitan Opera, New York (Belcore and Marcello), La Scala, Milan (Papageno and Count Almaviva under Muti), in Ferrara (Don Giovanni under Abbado), and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (Belcore, Marcello, Guglielmo under Colin Davis and Count Almaviva under Haitink). He will return to La Scala (Belcore), the Metropolitan Opera (Figaro and Papageno), the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (Billy Budd, Ford, Papageno, Hamlet and Don Giovanni, Munich (Wolfram), the Vienna State Opera (Count Almaviva under Muti) and Paris (Eugene Onegin). Simon enjoys extensive concert work, appearing with the Israel Philharmonic under Mehta, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under Abbado, the Berlin Philharmonic under Abbado, the City of Birmingham Symphony under Rattle, the London Symphony Orchestra under Colin Davis, the Philharmonia under von Dohnanyi, the Cleveland Orchestra under Welser Möst and the Vienna Philharmonic under Muti. In 1998 Simon Keenlyside appeared in recital at La Scala Milan, the first in a series of recital engagements which includes appearances in New York, Lisbon, Geneva, Amsterdam, Ferrara, Rome, Brussels, London, Graz, the Edinburgh and Hohenems Festivals, and both the Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna. For EMI he has recorded two recital discs with Malcolm Martineau, of Schubert and Strauss, and - for Hyperion - a disc of Schumann Lieder with Graham Johnson. In 1997 he recorded 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' under Rattle for EMI and the title role in 'Don Giovanni' under Abbado for D.G. In 1998 he recorded 'Carmina Burana' under Thielemann for D.G. and Marcello in 'La Bohème' under Chailly for Decca. In 1999 he recorded the title role in Billy Budd'.
