| Mariss Jansons, Music Director of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra since 1979, is recognised as one of the most distinguished musicians of his generation. In recent years he has made successful guest appearances with leading orchestras in North America including the Boston, Chicago,Philadelphia,Cleveland and New York Philharmonic Orchestras and in Europe with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras. He has had a long association with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and since 1985 he has served as Associate Principal Conductor of the Orchestra.\n\nFrom September 1997 he assumes the position of Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.\n\nMariss Jansons has an exclusive recording contract with EMI for whom he has made many acclaimed recordings including works by Berlios, Dvorak, Bartok, Profokiev, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Shostakovich, Sibelius and Stravinsky. He was appointed EMI Classic's Artist of the Year for 1996. |
