Marilena Laurenza studied at the «Giovanni Battista Martini» Conservatory of Bologna under Leone Magiera and specialised under Elvina Ramella, Rodolfo Celletti and Riccardo Canessa.

Marilena Laurenza started her career performing in the role of the soprano repertoire in the main Italian theatres such as the Teatro alla Scala, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Teatro Politeama Greco di Lecce, the Teatro Regio di Torino, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Rossini Opera Festival di Pesaro, the Festival of Martina Franca, and working with conductors such as Riccardo Chailly and Myung-Whun Chung.

The most important interpretations of that period include the role of Ascanio in Pergolesi's Lo frate 'nnamorato at the Teatro alla Scala conducted by Riccardo Muti.

Since 1995 she has been dedicating herself to the mezzo soprano repertoire performing as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Tisbe in La Cenerentola, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, and in Stravinski's Les noces. She also performed in Leonardo Leo's Amor vuol sofferenza at the Festival of Martina Franca, Fioravanti?s Le cantatrici villane (Agata) in Naples, Gli zoccoli in villa in Città di Castello and Le astuzie femminili (Leonora) in Messina.

In 1996/7 season she sang La brocca rotta (Brigida) at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, La Dirindina and L'impresario delle Canarie at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele di Messina.

In 1997/8 season she performed in L'elisir d'amore (Giannetta), Eva and Il Campiello at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, in Adriana Lecouvreur (Mademoiselle Jouvenot) at the Stadttheater of Bern.@In 1998 she also sang as Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze.

More recently, she has performed in Norma, L'Osteria di Marechiaro,Pulcinella and Te voglio bene assai at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, in Il campanello (Mamma Rosa) in Fermo, La traviata in Salerno, Andrea Chénier (Bersi) at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste and L'elisir d'amore and Rigoletto at the Teatro alla Scala, this last toured to Japan.

Marilena Laurenza will return to the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli for Adriana Lecouvreur.

Her concert activity includes Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Mendelssohn's Die erste Walpurgisnacht in Cagliari and Scarlatti's Stabat Mater in Napoli with Roberto De Simone. She collaborates with Quartetto «Leonardo Leo» specialised in Neapolitan music of the 18th Century.

Marilena Laurenza also recorded Rossini's La cambiale di matrimonio (Clarina) for Ricordi and La donna del lago (Albina) under the baton of Riccardo Muti for Philips.
