Born in Trieste, he starts his singing studies in his native town at the Tartini Conservatory, specializing then in Munich with Metternich and in Rome with Guelfi.

He made his debut in 1985 in Trieste in Cimarosa's Maestro di Cappella. He subsequently performed in La Notte, a pastiche of Mozart's works, at the Festival dei due Mondi di Spoleto (1987).

In 1988 he made his debut at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos and in Die Lustige Witwe.

He attended the courses run by Claudio Desderi at the Music School of Fiesole and he has been selected to perform in the role of Guglielmo in Così fan tutte (Massa and Firenze) conducted by Desderi.

In the last seasons he sang in Parsifal (Teatro Verdi di Trieste), Don Giovanni (Britten Theatre in London, Teatro Verdi di Pisa, Lucca), Evgenij Onegin (Teatro La Fenice di Venezia), La traviata (Treviso, Savona), La Bohème (Fermo), Le nozze di Figaro (Florence, Pisa, Massa), Les contes d'Hoffmann, Werther (Teatro Verdi di Trieste), Fedora (Trieste, Treviso, Rovigo), L'elisir d'amore (As.Li.Co., Pisa), La scala di seta (Arena Sferisterio di Macerata), L'occasione fa il ladro (Macerata, National Theatre in Prague), Il turco in Italia (Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Trieste), Malipiero's Sior Todero Brontolon (Venezia, Treviso), Menotti's La santa di Blaker street (Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania), Rossini's La pietra del paragone (Teatro Comunale di Modena), La cambiale di matrimonio (Arena Sferisterio in Macerata), Boris Godunov (Venice), Tristan und Isolde (Trieste), I quatro rusteghi (new production of the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia), Offenbach's Pepito (Florence) and in Das Rheingold (Alberich; in a stage competition organised by the Graz).

His repertoire also includes works as L'italiana in Algeri, Le comte Ory, Don Pasquale, La sonnambula, Lucia di Lammermoor, Madama Butterfly, Turandot, La forza del destino, Falstaff, Il campiello and I pagliacci.

More recently, he has performed in La Gioconda and Carmen in Genoa, in Tosca in Trieste, in La pietra del paragone at the Garsington Opera Festival, in La cenerentola in Udine, in Il trovatore in Fiume, in the Teatro

La Fenice production of L'inganno felice in Padova. He subsequently sang in La Bohème in Savona, in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro Verdi di Pisa, in La bella Elena at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste, in St. Johann Passion and Lohengrin at the Teatro Regio di Torino and Simon Boccanegra in Parma, Bolzano and on a Japan tour of the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia. He has just taken part in a new production of Un giorno di regno at Teatro alla Scala under the baton of Corrado Rovaris, in Falstaff in Rovigo, Bolzano and Trento and in I Pagliacci at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona.

Highlights of his future engagements include Don Quichotte at the Teatro Regio di Torino, Assassinio nella cattedrale at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Il processo and Madama Butterfly at the Teatro alla Scala.

In addition to his vast operatic repertoire, Paolo Rumetz maintains an active concert schedule, which includes works such as Frescobaldi's Praecursor Domini, Hasse's La conversione di san Agostino, Carmina Burana and Mahler's Lieder eines farhenden Geselle.
