The young Armenien piano virtuosa Sona Shaboyan has been living and creating music in Zürich for the last year and a half. As a pianist, she is particularly renown in her homeland for her musical interpretation and as an advocate of piano music. Her most recently released CD offers very interesting and seldomheard works from the composers Komitas, Katchaturian, Andreasian, Saradian, Arutiunian, Ba-bachanian, Mirsoian and Sargsian. The repertoire of this charismatic and versatile musician is genuine poetry and blossoming colours with the addition of electrifying intensity and tension. She has the ability to interpret a wide range of composers from Bach to Mozart via Chopin and Poulenc to Stravinsky, and is able to create a seemingly endless abundance of emotion.
Sona Shaboyan's playing is the ideal balance between the finest piano technique, power and fingerwork, and romantic dreaminess and passion. This style is typical of the great Russian piano schools.
The artist was born in Eriwan, where she attended the Tschaikovsky Music School and the Komitas Conservatory, receiving her first piano lessons. She perfected her playing under the guidance of highprofile pianists such as Michel Béroff in Freiburg im Breisgau and Homero Francesch in Zürich. Masterclasses under the supervision of Vitaly Margulis, Ludmilla Ginzburg, András Schiff and John Perry have added their characteristics to her repertoire of styles.
Recently, the Armenien who left her hometown at the age of 18 years, commented on her playing, saying "A few wrong notes are nothing terrible. Much worse is when the music sounds so clinically clean that it leaves me feeling emotionally indifferent. It is not enough to practice ten hours a day learning the music by heart, and then to rattle away on the keys like an automatic Kalaschnikov. Charisma is also required." She remains true to her words, creating her own unmistakable style. She is an interpreter who remains loyal to the soul of the composer.
