Raimondi Ruggero
basso

Ruggero Raimondi was bom in Bologna and began his musicai studies at the "G. Verdi" Conservatory in Milan, continuing them in Rome under the guidance of Teresa Pediconi and Armando Piervenanzi. In 1964, after winning the National Competiton for young opera singers "A. Belli" in Spoleto, he made his debut during the season of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale Adriano Belli, as Colline in 'La Bohème'. His big chance then came from the Rome Opera House which called him to take over the role of Procida in 'I Vespri Siciliani', where he was acclaimed by both public and critics.

The sensation of this debut led to a series of invitations in the most important international theatres: La Fenice in Venice, the Teatro Regio in Turin, La Scala in Milan, the Comunale in Florence, the Glyndebourne Festival, MET in New York, Covent Garden in London, Paris, Vienna etc. Ruggero Raimondi soon became a world-famous personality thanks to his rare ability to combine exceptional vocal qualities with the expressive stage presence of a great actor. These characteristics led to prestigious engagements with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Herbert von Karajan, Zubin Mehta, Leonard Bernstein, Lorin Maazel and Riccardo Chailly among others, and directors such as Piero Faggioni, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, Luca Ronconi and Giorgio Strehler.

Ruggero Raimondi has to his credit a vast catalogue of recordings ranging from Rossini ('Il Barbiere di Siviglia', 'L'ltaliana in Algeri', Il Viaggio a Reims', 'Mosé in Egitto') to Verdi (all major roles from the bass repertoire), to Puccini, all of Mozart, the French repertoire and, more recently, Russian with 'Boris Godunov' conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich. In particular, his most important recent interpretations include Philip II in Verdi's 'Don Carlo' (he also recorded the rare complete French version conducted by Claudio Abbado), and Massenet's 'Don Quichotte' in a legendary production by Piero Faggioni conducted by Georges Prêtre, in Paris and repeated in Venice, Naples, Florence, Barcelona, Monte-Carlo, Washington, Parma and Tokyo. Ruggero Raimondi also appeared in the famous film productions of'Don Giovanni' directed by Joseph Losey, 'Carmen' directed by Francesco Rosi and 'Boris Godunov' directed by Andrej Zulawski. In 1992, he played Scarpia in the version of 'Tosca' broadcast live from the original places and times in Rome to 106 countries, with Placido Domingo and Catherine Malfitano, conducted by Zubin Mehta.

Among his more recent performances, he played the Conte in 'Le Nozze di Figaro', in the extraordinary production by Jonathan Miller conducted by Claudio Abbado in Vienna, which he then repeated in Ferrara and Tokyo. Memorable productions in 1995 included 'Faust' in Tokyo and 'Les Contes d'Hoffmann' in Zurich. In 1996, he portrayed Iago in 'Otello' at the Salzburg Easter Festival and Verdi's Falstaff in Berlin and Ferrara with Claudio Abbado. In 2000 he sang Thomas Beckct in Pizzetti's 'Murder in the Cathedral', which received the prize of 'best lyrical production of the year' given by the Italian opera critics.
End of 2001 opened the movie 'Tosca' directed by Benoit Jacquot. In 2004 he sings his first Don Alfonso in 'Così fan tutte'.
