He made his debut in Reggio Emilia in 1966 in Donizetti's Elisir d'amore.
He was highly successful at the Spoleto Festival in Rossini's Italiana in Algeri in 1969, and two years later he was first heard at La Scala in Il Barbiere di Siviglia conductedd by Claudio Abbado.
With his extraordinary stage presence, he made a name for himself all over the world as a comic bass of great taste and a clear sense of style, especially in the comic operas of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century such as Don Pasquale, La Figlia del Reggimento, Linda di Chamonix by Donizetti, Il matrimonio Segreto by Cimarosa, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Il Turco in Italia, Il viaggio a Reims by Rossini, of which he has left precious, interesting recordings.
Since 2010 he teachs at Accademia di Canto del Teatro alla Scala in Milano. |
