He studied violin and piano while majoring in bassoon at the Folkwangschulen in Essen. In 1961 he began performing as a bassoonist at the Städtebundtheater Hof in Bavaria, then from 1962 to1971 in Schwabischen Sinfonieorchester Reutlingen, between 1972 and 1977 in Sinfonieorchester in Süddeutschen Rundfunks Stuttgart. In 1972 he started voice training with Hertha Kalcher in Stuttgart. Beginning in 1975 he performed occasionally with the Stuttgarter Staatsoper (his first role: Prisoner in Beethoven's Fidelio). In 1976 he sang at Darmstadt and Aachen, at the Zurich Opera Festival and the Staatsoper Hamburg in Lohengrin, one of his starring roles. His major career in the Wagner Fach began at the Bayeuth Festival, where he sang Froh in Rheingold (1977-80), Parsifal (1979-80, 1982 and 1987-88), Lohengrin (1979-80), Walther von Stolzing (1981-84 and 1986), Siegfried (1983-86 and 1988-92), Tristan (1993 and 1995-96) , and Loge in Rheingold (1994-96) . A guest contract with the state operas of Stuttgart and Munich in 1977 ended his career as a bassoonist and became a member of the Deutschen Oper Berlin. In 1978 he was heard as Lohengrin at the Munich Festival and as Max in Freischütz at the Hamburger Staatsoper. He appeared at the Saltzburg Festival in 1979 in The Lost Paradise by K. Penderecki. In 1980 he was invited by the Metropolitan Opera in New York (debut role: Lohengrin) for the major Wagner roles including Loge in Rheingold, (1989-90), Siegmund, Siegfried and in Parisfal. He sang in the film of The Gypsy Baron. At the Geneva Opera in 1984 he undertook Idomeneo. In 1985, Covent Garden saw him as Erik in The Flying Dutchman, English National Opera and Teatro Fenice in Venice as Parsifal; in 1990, he portrayed Idomeneo in Los Angeles. He was Siegfried in Chicago (1995-96), Covent Garden (1994-95) and Staatsoper Berlin (1996). At the May Festival in Wiesbaden he took over the roles of Loge, Siegmund and Siegfried in 1996. He was a success on stage and in concert in European and American music centers where he excelled as an interpreter of Lieder.
