Kontarsky Bernhard
direttore d'orchestra

Bernhard Kontarsky inaugurates this season with Stravinsky's oratorio Oedipus Rex and Symphony of Psalms at the Canadian Opera Toronto, and, after a series of concerts in Lille, he will conduct Luigi Nono's Prigioniero at the Opéra de Nancy. Further projects are the new production of Alban Berg's Lulu at the Opéra National de Paris as well as the world premiere of the opera Les Nègres, which will be shown as a co-production in Lyon and Geneva.

Bernhard Kontarsky is a world-wide renowned congenial interpreter of Hans Werner Henze's works, which lead him last season to the Oper Frankfurt for the new production of Henze's Das verratene Meer and to the Teatro Carlo Felice Genova for Henze's Boulevard Solitude. Beforehand, he conducted this opera in a new production at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden London with an enormous success and presented the concert versions of Henze?s Boulevard Solitude and Venus und Adonis at the Oper Frankfurt.

At the Staatstheater Stuttgart Bernhard Kontarsky conducted the first performance of the opera Erendira by Violeta Dinescu, Intolleranza 1960 by Luigi Nono, the first performance of Rolf Riehm's Schweigen der Sirenen and Zimmermann's Die Soldaten. He made several guest appearances at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Schoenberg's Moses und Aron), Opéra National de Paris (the world premiere of Pascal Dusapin's Nosferatu and Zimmerman's Die Soldaten), Bayerische Staatsoper Munich (first performance of Sansibar by Ekkehard Mayer in the co-production with the Schwetzinger Festival), Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf (new production of Alban Berg's Wozzeck), the Wiener Staatsoper (Die Soldaten), Bolshoi Theatre Moscow and at the Kirov Theatre St. Petersburg. The last-named opera was recorded for radio and TV and received the International Disk Award of the German Press in 1992.

He conducted concerts and recordings for all of the German broadcasting companies and the Austrian Broadcasting Company (ORF). Moreover he conducted the Orchestre de Paris, the Mozarteum-Orchester and the Berliner Sinfonieorchester as well as concerts at the Wiener Musikverein, the Gewandhaus Leipzig, the Bayerischer Rundfunk München, in Antwerp, Verona and Palermo.

Bernhard Kontarsky was born in Iserlohn/Westfalen Germany in 1937. He studied in Cologne conducting, piano, chamber music and musicology. Already while studying, he received the Mendelssohn Award for Chamber Music. His first engagement was at the Oper der Stadt Bonn, then Ferdinand Leitner took him to Stuttgart, where he conducted a series of experimental music theatre. Since 1981, Bernhard Kontarsky teaches contemporary music at the Music Academy of Frankfurt.@
