Luigi Petroni made his professional debut in Il matrimonio segreto at the Teatro Regio di Torino, followed by several engagements at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma with the diverse repertoire of The Civil Wars by Philip Glass, Don Giovanni with Peter Maag, Cherubini's Demophoon and Puccini's Manon Lescaut.

Luigi Petroni's recent seasons highlights include performances of Arminio (Varo) in Solothurn, at the Accademia Chigiana di Siena (Cd recorded for Virgin) and in Amsterdam with Curtis, Chi dell'altrui si veste presto si spoglia at the Teatro alla Scala, and the recording of Le nozze di Teti e Peleo with Riccardo Chailly for Decca. In 2000/1 season he sang in Così fan tutte (Ferrando) on a Japan tour of the Piccolo Teatro di Milano and at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Il campiello at the Japan Opera Foundation in Tokyo, followed by appearances at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia as Basilio in Le nozze di Figaro and in the role of Clistene in Olimpiade, in Milan in L?italiana in Algeri (Lindoro; with As.Li.Co.), and at the Opernhaus in Zurich as Conte d'Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, as Lindoro in L'Italiana in Algeri and as Filipeto in I quattro rusteghi.

Luigi Petroni has just made three successful debuts: in L'incoronazione di Poppea at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and in Reggio Emilia, in Lisbon as Basilio in Le nozze di Figaro, and at the Bayerische Staatsoper of Munich in Il barbiere di Siviglia.

Highlights of his future engagements include L'italiana in Algeri and Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Opernhaus in Zurich, and I pagliacci and La rondine at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse.

Luigi Petroni has been a regular guest of the Rossini Opera Festival of Pesaro, since his debut there in 1995 in Semiramide, conducted by Alberto Zedda. He has also been heard in Pesaro as Egoldo in Matilde di Shabran, Ernesto in Ricciardo e Zoraide, and as Éliézer in Moïse et Pharaon. Other Italian engagements of the tenor have included performances at the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania (L'heure espagnole, Salome and Guglielmo Tell), the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia (I quatro rusteghi by Wolf-Ferrari, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La gazza ladra, L'inganno felice, Martin Y Soler's Una cosa rara, Le nozze di Figaro), the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli (Il matrimonio segreto), the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma (Boris Godunov), the Teatro Comunale di Bologna (Cimarosa's L'amor rende sagace, Offenbach's Barbablu, Anna Bolena, Il turco in Italia), the Festival dei Due Mondi of Spoleto (L'elisir d'amore, Auber's Fra diavolo and Stravinsky's Mavra), as well as at the theatres of Trieste (Don Giovanni), Cagliari (Turandot, L'elisir d'amore, Carmina Burana), Bergamo (C.S. Mayr's L'avaro and L'intrigo della lettera), Piacenza (Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica), Mantova (Offenbach's Orfeo all'inferno with As.Li.Co), Reggio Emilia (as Nearco in Donizetti's Les Martyrs; as Ippia in Saffo), Ravenna (La cambiale di matrimonio).

His credits abroad include Il barbiere di Siviglia at the New Israeli Opera, Il signor Bruschino and La scala di seta in Budapest, Anna Bolena in Montecarlo, Martin y Soler's Il burbero di buon cuore in Montpellier, Boemondo in Elena da Feltre and Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi at the Wexford Opera Festival, Carmina Burana in Angers with Hubert Soudant, Il barbiere di Siviglia in Zurich, Il cappello di paglia di Firenze at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Giudizio di Paride in Tourcoing.

The tenor enjoys a concert career as well, having performed Händel's Messiah, Haydn's Die Schöpfung, Pergolesi's F Major Mass and Miserere, Bach's Saint Matthew Passion, Rossini's Petite messe solennelle (which was recorded by the West Deutsche Rundfunk in Köln), Stravinsky's Les noces, Jommelli's L'Armida abbandonata and Mosè in Egitto with the Solisti Veneti, conducted by Claudio Scimone. Luigi Petroni had a great personal success in his first performance of Rossini's Stabat Mater with the Oslo Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ari Rasilainen. He has recently performed in Missa romana and Dixit Dominus under the baton of Rinaldo Alessandrini at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Rossini's Stabat Mater at the Teatro Regio di Torino.

Luigi Petroni was the winner of the 1st International «Enrico Caruso» Competition and of the International Voice Contest of the Teatro Regio di Torino.
