American dramatic mezzo-soprano Jane Henschel\n commands a repertoire that encompasses roles such as\n Amneris, Eboli, Ortrud, Erda, Brangäne, Herodias,\n Carmen, Azucena, Ulrica, Dame Quickly, Venus,\n Klytemnestra and Fricka. The Los Angeles native\n completed her studies at the University of Southern\n California, then moved to Europe and soon started\n appearing with most major German opera companies. In\n 1992, she made her debut at the Netherlands Opera as\n the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten, a role she\n repeated in her triumphant debut at the Royal Opera\n House, Covent Garden, under the baton of Bernard\n Haitink. She returned to Covent Garden for Fricka in Das\n Rheingold and Die Walküre, Ulrica in Un Ballo in\n Maschera, and, most recently, her first Klytemnestra in\n Elektra. Other recent successes include Oberto and The\n Rake's Progress at the Glyndebourne Festival, Herodias\n in Salome and Cassandre in Les Troyens at Milan's La\n Scala, Die Frau ohne Schatten in Munich, Bluebeard's\n Castle in Stockholm, Waltraute in Götterdämmerung at\n Covent Garden, Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde at the\n Orange Festival and the Los Angeles Music Center\n Opera, and the title role of Goldmark's Königin von Saba\n at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. The current season\n includes Brangäne for the Paris Opera, The Turn of the\n Screw at Covent Garden, Dialogues of the Carmelites at\n Netherlands Opera and her first Erwartung for the New\n Zealand Festival. Also included this season are Herodias\n and Klytemnestra for the Bavarian State Opera, Munich,\n GeneviËve in Pelléas et Mélisande under Seiji Ozawa in\n Japan, and a new production of Die Frau ohne Schatten\n for the Deutsche Oper, Berlin. No stranger to the concert\n hall, Miss Henschel has been heard with most of the\n major orchestras and conductors of Europe. Her\n recordings include the Mahler's 8th Symphony, Krasa's\n Verlobung im Traum, and Stravinsky's The Rake's\n Progress, the latter led by Seiji Ozawa. |
