After studying medicine, she took up voice with Margarethe von Winterfeldt, Franziska Martienssen-Lohmann and Paul Lohmann. She made her debut in Freiburg as Leonora in Il trovatore. She sang at the Zürich Opera House from 1951 to 1954, where she took part in the world premiere of the new version of Hindemith's Cardillac. From 1954 to 1959 she sang at the Deutscher Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg, from 1956 to 1961 a the Cologne Opera House. She came to the Munich State Opera in 1961, and was a regular guest at the Vienna State Opera and at the Hamburg Statee Opera. In 1972, she returned to the Zürich Opera House. She joined the Städtische Oper, Berlin in 1954 (which became the Deutsches Opernhaus, Berlin in 1961) and later became an honorary member. At that house she appeared in the world premiere of Ulisse by Luigi Dallapicola (29 September1968). In 1962 she took on Elsa at Bayreuth. She assumed such roles as Ilia in Idomeneo in 1956 at the Salzburg Festival , Chrysothemis and the title role in Ariadne auf Naxos (1964-65), in Munich, at the Holland Festival, at Covent Garden (the Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten in 1967), at the Berlin State Opera, in Rio de Janeiro, Tunis, Paris and Rome. She appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, during the1968-69 season. There were further guest appearances at the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, at the San Francisco Opera, in Bordeaux and Nice, at the Edinburgh Festival, in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Venice, Barcelona, at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, in Dresden and Prague. She was also internationally successful as a concert soloist. Hers was a beautiful, well trained and expressive voice of considerable volume, most appreciated in the works of Verdi, Puccini (Tosca), Mozart, Wagner and Richard Strauss.
