Roberto Scaltriti was born in Modena and attended the «G.B. Martini» Conservatory in Bologna, studying with Leone Magiera and Paola Molinari.

In April 1985, by the age of sixteen, he won the «Opera Company of Philadelphia - Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition». He made his debut in 1986 as Alcindoro in La Bohème with Luciano Pavarotti broadcasted throughout the United States; with the same production he also toured in Italy, China and Germany.

Since 1988 he studied at the Mozart Seminar in Fiesole (Florence) with Claudio Desderi with whom he performed as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni and in Le nozze di Figaro in several Italian theatres.

His fast and early international career progressively brought him to perform in a operatic repertoire that includes La Bohème (Schaunard; Hamburgische Staatsoper, 1989), Don Giovanni (Masetto; Glyndebourne Opera Festival, 1991 and 1994; Amsterdam conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt in 1992; Teatro alla Scala with Riccardo Muti in 1993; Lyric Opera of Chicago in 1996), Don Giovanni (title role; Nantes, 1996; Amsterdam, 1997), Così fan tutte (Guglielmo; Glyndebourne Touring Opera, 1991; with Ivor Bolton at the Nederlandse Opera, 1997), La gazza ladra (Nantes, 1993), Ariadne auf Naxos (Broomhill, 1993), L?incoronazione di Poppea (Amsterdam, 1993), Monteverdi?s Orfeo (in concert version in Vienna and Zurich), I Capuleti e i Montecchi (in concert version at the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam in 1994), Le nozze di Figaro (as Conte d?Almaviva in Amsterdam in 1994 and in Nice in 1996; in the title role at the Welsh National Opera in 1995), Giancarlo Menotti?s Il telefono (Naples; 1995), Il maestro di cappella (Piccolo Teatro Comunale di Firenze, 1995), La clemenza di Tito (Publio; Théâtre des Champs Elysées, 1996; Opéra de Lausanne, 1997), Händel's Rinaldo (Festival International de Musique Baroque of Beaune and Théâtre des Champs-Elysées of Paris, 1996), L'elisir d?amore (Belcore; Lyon, 1996), La cenerentola (Alidoro; Genova, 1997), Apollo e Dafne and L'enfant et les sortilège (Florence, 1997); Händel's Admeto (at the Sydney Festival with «Les Talens Lyriques» conducted by Christophe Rousset, 1998).

In 1998 he obtained great success in the portraying of Monteverdi?s Orfeo at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze, directed by Luca Ronconi and conducted by Renée Jacobs, as well as in the new production of Don Giovanni under the baton of Claudio Abbado and with the direction of Peter Brook in Aix-En-Provence. He subsequently sang in Missa in tempore belli with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, in L'inganno felice at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, in Monteverdi's Orfeo (Apollo) at the Opéra de Lausanne, in Giulio Cesare in Montpellier and at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, and appeared in Salzburg for Les Boréades, at the Istambul Festival in Il tamerlano, at the Vlaamse Opera in Anvers in Le nozze di Figaro (Conte d'Almaviva), and at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées de Paris in Così fan tutte.

Highlights of his future engagements also include Così fan tutte in Aix en Provence and in Japan, Bach's B minor Mass at the Teatro Comunale Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, La clemenza di Tito at the Opéra National de Paris and in L'elisir d'amore at the Nederlandsee Opera in Amsterdam.

After some early recording appearances with Decca, Teldec, Philips, Emi and with such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Chailly, Antonio Pappano and Carlo Rizzi, Roberto Scaltriti?s discography in major roles includes Händel's Riccardo I (Isaccio) for Decca/L'Oiseau-Lyre with Christophe Rousset, Don Giovanni (Masetto) conducted by George Solti and L'elisir d'amore (Belcore) conducted by Evelino Pidò for Decca.

A recent CD recital of concert arias by Mozart, Haydn, Cimarosa, Martin y Soler and Salieri with Les Talens Lyriques conducted by Christophe Rousset and recorded for Decca/L'Oiseau-Lyre has been awarded with the Diapason d'Or (April 1998).
