The soprano Hui He was born in Shaanxi (China) and now she lives in Xi’An (the old imperial city, known for the earthenware army) and became famous in the world of international music after winning the 2nd Prize in the “Placido Domingo’s Operalia” International Competition, held in Los Angeles in September 2000. All the members of the prestigious jury underlined her extraordinary voice and the wonderful musicality. On January 5th, 2001 she gave an important concert with Placido Domingo in Shanghai. Two years later, in April 2002, she took part at the 42nd “Verdi’s Voice” International Competition in Busseto (Parma, Italy) and won the 1st Prize. The president of the prestigious jury was the renowned soprano Leyla Gencer, who immediately expressed her enthusiasm about the singing capabilities of the soprano. Hui He is one of the most loved soloists by the Chinese public and the mass media (she recently performed in the New Year Concert, in the Great Hall of the Parliament Building in Beijing, in the presence of the President of the Republic and of important Chinese political and cultural representatives). Furthermore she has newly obtained a great triumph in Madama Butterfly in Hong Kong for the premiere of the 2006/2007 season of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and she was acclaimed with an exciting standing ovation. In February 2002 she made her Italian debut at the Teatro Regio in Parma in the role of Tosca (after an intense preparatory course on the role with the famous soprano Raina Kabaiwanska, one of the greatest interpreter of the role of Tosca) to great critical acclaim. The triumphant debut resulted in several engagements: the role of Alzira by Verdi (Festival Verdi in Parma); the role of Aida (production of Franco Zeffirelli in the theatres of Busseto, Lucca, Roma, Catanzaro, Napoli, Firenze and Piacenza); the role of Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera (Verona and Bolzano). In February 2003 she made her debut in France, at the Opéra de Bordeaux, as Madama Butterfly, where she was very successful with both the public and the critics. In consequence of her great success, the Director of the Theatre Thierry Fouquet offered Hui He to come back in the following three years to sing in a Recital, in Tosca and Aida. In 2003 she was at Festival Puccini in Torre del Lago (Lucca, Italy) to sing the role of Madama Butterfly. Her presence gave the opportunity to record a documentary film “Madame Butterfly. L’empreinte du papillon”, directed by the French director Marie-Blanc- Hermeline and broadcasted by the satellite channels ( France 5, Mezzo, CNC, Artè etc.). In 2004 she made her Volksoper debut in Vienna in the role of Cio-cio-san / Madama Butterfly with great success. The press wrote: “The debut of Hui He as Butterfly was sensational. She has convinced not only with her great voice, wonderful technique and marvellous timbre, but she has also touched with an intense and moving interpretation. The best Butterfly that we could wish. The standing ovation was really deserved”(Wiener Zeitung); “Since her fist note Hui He propagates nothing but emotion. With her simple, effective gestural expressiveness and with her inexhaustible power of dramatic shades, Hui He turned the theatre tragedy into a real tragedy, leaving the public speechless”(Der Standard); “The protagonist is extraordinary: Hui He is an excellent Butterfly. Dramatic in her vocal explosions, always sure and touching. A real find. Deserved applauses and ovations!” (Kurier).
Afterwards she performed again Cio-cio-san/ Madama Butterfly in a new production at Teatro Del Giglio in Lucca (the city where Giacomo Puccini was born), organized for the Centenary of the first performance of Madama Butterfly (1904), and then staged in eight Italian theatres: Ravenna, Livorno, Pisa, Sassari, Bolzano, Trento, Rovigo and Parma.
In 2004 it was a great success her Vienna Staatsoper debut in the role of Lina in Verdi’s Stiffelio, along with Renato Bruson and José Cura (conductor M° Marco Armiliato). Following her success, the director of the Staatsoper Dr. Joan Holender invited her back to sing in three productions (Madama Butterfly, Aida, Un Ballo in Maschera and still Stiffelio), so she has engagements at the Wiener Staatsoper until 2010.
