Popp Lucia
soprano [ 1939 - 1993 ]

She was initially involved in movies, but later, from 1959-63 she received vocal training in Bratislava (Pressburg) and Prague, mainly under Anna Hrusvovska-Prosenková. She made her debut while studying at the Bratislava opera house as the Queen of the Night. Soon thereafter she sang Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro in the Theater an der Wien in the Austrian capital, where for the first time she caused quite a sensation. In 1963 she began a string of success at the Staatsoper of Vienna. At the Salzburg Festival she appeared at first in small, and later larger roles, beginning in 1963-64 as the first boy in Zauberflöte, in 1963 Artemis in Gluck's Iphigenie en Aulide, in 1964 Najade in Ariadne auf Naxos and a servant in Elektra. In 1978-79 she graduated to Sophie, in 1980-81 Pamina, in 1983 Ilia in Idomeneo, in 1986 and 1992 the Countess in Nozze di Figaro, and in 1987 the Countess in Capriccio. In addition, until 1990 she repeatedly participated in oratorios, Mozart masses and lieder recitals. In 1986 she could be heard in Bayreuth. She was a member of the opera of Cologne from 1967. Since 1966 she regularly performed at Covent Garden, among others, as Oscar in Un ballo in maschera (debut), as Gilda, Despina, Ännchen in Freischütz, as Sophie, and in 1986 as Arabella. Another highlight was Sesto in Händel's Giulio Cesare. In 1967 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera as the Queen of the Night in the legendary production with Chagall's stage design; in the next three seasons, her roles there included Zerlina, Ilia, Pamina and Sophie. She also performed these roles at the Grand Opéra Paris. In 1977-78 she was the focus of a Mozart cycle at the Cologne opera, in which seven Mozart operas were presented. She appeared at the Staatsopern of Munich (where she performed over a period of twenty years, among others in 1989 as Elsa), Hamburg and Stuttgart, in Frankfurt am Main, Karlsruhe and Mannheim, at the Graz opera house, and at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (among others as Eva). Since 1977 she appeared at the Zurich opera house, where she had debuted as Sophie. In 1981 she appeared at the Munich Staatsoper in the world premiere of Lou Salomé by G. Sinopoli. In 1989 she sang the Marschallin at Covent Garden, in 1990 the Countess in Nozze di Figaro at the Grand Opéra of Paris, in 1991, Daphne in a concert performance, and Elsa in Zurich. There she was seen for the last time in March of 1993 as Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tito. Not only was the beautiful sound of her voice and her perfect technique admired, but also her attractive appearance and acting skills. She also had a great career as a concert, oratorio and Lieder singer, in works of Mozart, Mahler, Strauss and Orff. Her first marriage was to the conductor Georg Fischer, her second to the tenor Peter Seiffert.
