Antonacci Anna Caterina
soprano

An extraordinary vocal timbre and great acting skills have enabled Anna Caterina Antonacci to perform a vast and varied repertoire on the world's most important stages. Her repertoire ranges from Monteverdi (L'incoronazione di Poppea, Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda), Händel (Serse, Rodelinda), Paisiello and Cimarosa to the music of the Italian belcanto. She has made a speciality of Rossini roles (Ermione, Elena, Elcia, Ninetta, Semiramide, Elisabetta), and also of the German and French chamber music of the 19th and 20th century, as well as some mezzo-soprano roles such as Rosina, Cenerentola, Romeo, Adalgisa, Charlotte, Dulcinée, and Carmen.

Anna Caterina Antonacci's successful career brought her to appear on the greatest international stages, in collaboration with some of the most important conductors and directors in the world.

Her appearances included L'incoronazione di Poppea at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées de Paris, Teatro alla Scala and Bayerische Staatsoper, Ermione at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, San Francisco Opera and at the Glyndebourne Festival (staged by Graham Vick), Händel's Rodelinda at the Glyndebourne Festival conducted by William Christie, Agrippina at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and in Paris (conducted by René Jacobs), Combattimento e lamento in London with Ivor Bolton, Pulcinella with the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester and Chailly and, more recently, I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and Don Giovanni in Palermo, at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and at the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli.

She portrayed the roles of Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and of Dorabella in Così fan tutte in Ferrara with Claudio Abbado. Again under the baton of Abbado, she took part as soloist in several concerts in Italy, Berlin, Munich and Montreux, where she sang, among others, all the roles of Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda.

Anna Caterina Antonacci inaugurated the 1996/7 season of the Teatro alla Scala with Gluck's Armide staged by Pierluigi Pizzi and conducted by Riccardo Muti, with whom she also sang in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in Ravenna, at the Musikverein in Vienna and at Covent Garden, and in Don Giovanni at the Teatro alla Scala, in Vienna, at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and at Ravenna Festival. In Ravenna, she has recently gained great success singing in a new production of Falstaff. She has also just debuted at the International Festival in Edinburgh in Maria Stuarda with Mackerras and Barbara Frittoli, and successfully portrayed the role of Dulcineé in Don Quichotte a the Teatro Regio di Torino.

Born in Ferrara, Anna Caterina Antonacci graduated at the Giovanni Battista Martini Conservatory of Bologna, where she studied voice, piano and composition. The soprano began her brilliant career winning the 1987 «Verdi» competition in Parma and, in the following year, the «Maria Callas» and «Pavarotti International» competitions. In 1990 the Italian Critics association awarded her the Abbiati prize.@
