Born in Illinois, he studied at the university there and made his debut in 1973. His repertory includes operas by Strauss, Mozart, Verdi, Donizetti, Gounod and Wagner, and he has appeared at many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, La Fenice, Venice, Berlin State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Opéra-Bastille, Le Châtelet, Paris, Houston, Dallas, Washington, Cologne and Munich, and at the Bayreuth Festival. |
He has worked with such conductors as Barenboim, Levine, Eschenbach, Slatkin, Rostropovich and Mehta. He made his Royal Opera debut in 2000 as Claggart, and returned as Sparafucile. His recent appearances have also included the Grand Inquisitor, Claggart (Vienna), Count Waldner (Metropolitan Opera), Hagen (Dallas), Germin (Costa Mesa) and King Marke (Barcelona). |
