Born in Viterbo, Alfonso Antoniozzi studied with the famous baritone Sesto Bruscantini and made his debut as don Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia in 1986 in Genoa.

After that he started a brilliant career, having performed in the major opera and concert houses in Italy and abroad in such operas as La cenerentola (Dallas, Turin, Trieste, Parma, Montecarlo, Verona), L?italiana in Algeri (San Francisco, Montecarlo), La forza del destino (Amsterdam, San Francisco, Turin, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome), La bohème (Milan, Bologna), Il turco in Italia (Milan, Montecarlo), Il barbiere di Siviglia (Rome, San Francisco, Dallas, Venice, Verona, Tokyo), Fedora (Bregenz Festival), L'elisir d?amore (Turin, Genoa, Dallas, Trieste), Turandot (Verona, Sydney), Falstaff (Madrid, Treviso), Gianni Schicchi, Don Giovanni (San Francisco, Dallas), Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Pasquale, Carmina Burana, L'occasione fa il ladro, Fra' diavolo and Die Fledermaus.

In 1998 he successfully debuted at the Wiener Staatsoper performing Dulcamara in L'elisir d'amore, and has subsequently re-proposed the same role at the Teatro alla Scala. In the same year he made his debut portraying the baritone role in Britten?s Death in Venice in San Francisco, the role of Barone of Kelbar in a new production of Un giorno di regno directed by Pizzi in Parma, of Emilio and of Beaupertuis in Nino Rota?s Il cappello di paglia di Firenze at the Teatro alla Scala, of Il Poeta in Il turco in Italia at the Opéra in Montecarlo staged by Pizzi, subsequently re-proposed at the Teatro Regio di Parma.

At the Teatro alla Scala, in 1999, he performed with an outstanding success and enthusiastic approvals Don Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia led by Riccardo Chailly and Frà Melitone in La forza del destino under the guidance of Riccardo Muti.

At the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome he has sung in Bernstein's Candide under the baton of Jeffrey Tate, taking care also of the textual Italian version, and in Orff's Carmina Burana led by Yuri Temirkanoff.

He has also performed in a new production of Death in Venice conducted by Bruno Bartoletti and directed by Pizzi for the season opening of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and has debuted at the Staatsoper unter der Linden in Berlin in Il barbiere di Siviglia.

He has recently made his debut at the Opéra de Paris as Taddeo in L'italiana in Algeri, role subsequently re-proposed at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo. Among his recent engagements are also Don Giovanni at the San Francisco Opera, La scala di seta at the Rossini Opera Festival, Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Wiener Staatsoper, in Paris, at the Teatro alla Scala, in Padova with the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, at the Théâtre du Capitol de Toulouse and at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Così fan tutte at the Houston Grand Opera and Un giorno di regno at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, in La Coruña and at the Teatro alla Scala, followed by Falstaff in Seattle and L?elisir d?amore at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse and by the re-proposal in Florence of the Genovese production of Death in Venice. He has just taken part in a successful production of Les contes d'Hoffmann at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, and in La forza del destino in Lima.

He will return to the Teatro alla Scala to perform Taddeo in L'italiana in Algeri and the role of Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola. His most important future engagements also include Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Così fan tutte (Don Alfonso) in Dallas and Montecarlo, La Cenerentola at the Washington Opera, in Dallas and in Chicago, and Il cappello di paglia di Firenze at the Teatro Regio di Torino and in Palermo.

Alfonso Antoniozzi's discography include La Bohème (EMI), Il signor Bruschino and Mare Nostro (Ricordi/Fonit Cetra), I tre amanti and Don Procopio (Bongiovanni), Il matrimonio segreto, Nina, o sia la pazza per amore and Linda di Chamounix (Arts Records), and Le nozze di Figaro (Telarc). Next release will be Donizetti?s La romanzesca and L?uomo nero for Opera Rara.
