Ferrarini Alida
soprano

Alida Ferrarini was born in Villafranca di Verona. After her musical studies at the 'Dall' Abaco' Conservatory, Verona, with Maestro Enzo Cecchetelli, she took part in numerous singing competitions, winning various prizes including the first prize at the Treviso International Competition in 1975 which earned her the chance to make her debut as Mimì in 'La Bohème'. Her great public success and the general critical appreciation of her vocal and acting qualities brought Alida Ferrarini her first major invitations, including her debut at La Fenice, Venice, as Drusilla in 'L'incoronazione di Poppea' and later at La Scala in 'L'elisir d'amore' produced by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and conducted by Giuseppe Patané, 'Carmen' (Micaela) and 'Rigoletto', again greeted by unanimous approval represented the first in a series of prestigious international performances. Immediately afterwards came her London debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Gilda in 'Rigoletto' produced by Franco Zeffirelli and later in the same season her United States debut in San Francisco with 'L'elisir d'amore'. Later she made her debut in Paris in a fine version of 'Il Matrimonio Segreto' in the Salle Favart produced by Michael Hampe. Alida Ferrarini is one of the most internationally appreciated interpreters of the role of Liù in Puccini's 'Turandot' which she has played in numerous productions in Italy - including Verona, Rome (Caracalla) and Genoa - and abroad - Bregenz, Munich, Paris and Tokyo where she took part in the tour by the Verona Arena companies with the famous production by Giuliano Monaldo, as well as the previously mentioned Micaela in 'Carmen', a character which she has taken to the most important stages in the world, including the famous production by Pier Luigi Pizzi presented in Paris's Palais de Bercy. Also worthy of note is her performance of Adina in 'L'elisir d'amore' which she played alongside Luciano Pavarotti at Bologna's Teatro Comunale where she also sang a highly acclaimed Nannetta in the production of 'Falstaff' conducted by Riccardo Chailly in 1988. In the Mozart repertoire, Alida Ferrarini has played Susanna in 'Le nozze di Figaro' in Bordeaux conducted by Alain Lombard, while she made her debut in the role of Zerlina in 'Don Giovanni' opening the 1993-94 opera season at the Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa. Her most recent performances include Gilda in 'Rigoletto' alongside Renato Bruson at Turin's Teatro Regio and above all the production of 'Carmen' at the Opera Bastille, Paris, conducted by Maestro Myun Wun Chung in which Alida Ferrarini obtained extraordinary public and critical success in 'her' role of Micaela (March and July). In summer '94, she returned to the Verona Arena, this time as Mimi in a series of performances of 'La Bohème'. She also played Liù in 'Turandot' on tour in Australia while in March 1995, she again played Micaela in 'Carmen', this time in Stuttgart and alongside José Carreras in the role of Don José. In the summer of 1995, she again played Micaela, this time in Franco Zeffirelli's production in the Verona Arena. She also partnered José Carreras in a gala concert with an act from Donizetti's 'Lucia di Lammermoor'. In January 1996, she played Mimì in 'La Bohème' at the Teatro Bellini, Catania, then again Micaela in 'Carmen' at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo and in summer 1996, once more Micaela for the repeat of the Zeffirrelli production of Carmen in the Verona Arena.
