He grew up in Wiesbaden and, after training in Munich, began his career in the 1969-70 season at the Pfalztheater in Kaiserslautern, (where he debuted as Don Giovanni). In 1971, he was engaged by the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and quickly began an international career. His preferred parts include Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, Wolfram, Germont-père in La Traviata and Pelléas, with which he had a particular success in 1973 in Munich. Until 1986, he was a member of the Munich Opera and afterwards, he was a frequent guest. After successful guest appearances at the leading German opera houses (Hamburg State Opera, Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg, Karlsruhe State Theater) and European stages, he debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1975 as Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro. His roles for this house included Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin in 1984, Germont-père in 1990, the Speaker in Die Zauberflöte in 1991, and Dr. Falke in Fledermaus in 1995. He undertook the solo part in Orff's Carmina Burana for the Salzburg Festival in 1975. In 1985-87 and 1989, he sang Wolfram at the Bayreuth Festival. He made guest appearances at La Scala in Milan as Almaviva in 1981 and as Wolfram in 1984. For Covent Garden, he was the Count di Luna (his debut in 1985); he also sang Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor there, Eugen Onegin in 1988 and Mandryka in 1996. He brought Mandryka to the Vienna State Opera in 1988 where he was a frequent guest, to the Zurich Opera (1990-91), and in 1996 to the Glyndebourne Festival. He was heard at the Chicago Opera as Miller in Verdi's Luisa Miller in 1983. In 1990 he sang Eugene Onegin there. In 1989-90, he sang Germont-père and Amfortas at the Teatro San Carlos Lisbon. He appeared at the San Francisco Opera, in Barcelona and Madrid. In 1993, he took part in the Deutsche Opera performances in Tokyo (as Hans Sachs, which he also sang at the Berlin State Opera the same year). In 1995, he was heard at the Macerata Festival as the High Priest in Samson et Dalila, and at the Met as Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus. He also had a worldwide career as a concert singer.
