Bayo Maria

María Bayo was born in Fitero (Navarra), and studied at the Pablo Sarasate Conservatoire in Pamplona under Edurne Aguerri. She continued her studies at the Musihochschule in Detmold (Germany). At that time she had already won many competitions, for instance Logroño, Julián Gayarre (Pamplona), Viñas (Barcelona) and María Callas (Naples). At the 1988 International Belvedere Competition in Vienna she was awarded a total of eleven prizes, including the overall first prize. She was unanimously awarded the first prize in the Spanish Radio Classical Music Awards in 1991. María Bayo has given Lieder recitals, and sung in oratorio and opera throughout Europe, America and Japan. In the spring of 1990 in Madrid, her Susanna was universally acclaimed by both the press and the audience. She repeated her success in this role in Paris (Bastille), Buenos Aires (Teatro Colon), Marsella and Montpellier. Other notable roles where Almirena in Handel's RINALDO singing alongside Teresa Berganza under the direction of Pier Luigi Pizzi in Lisbon, Madrid and Reggio Emilia; Micaela in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Bologna. In 1991-1992 she sang Norina at the Hamburg Oper, Rosina (IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA) at Montpellier and Strasbourg and had great success singing Amenaide from Rossini's TANCREDI at the Schwetzingen Festival. She sang in Mahler's Second Symphony and in Rossini's Stabat Mater in London conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli. In the same work she could be heard in Aix-Provence and during the International Religious Week in Cuenca (Spain). In 1992-93 she returned to Paris to sing Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in the Salle Pleyel with Teresa Berganza, and Antonia (LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN)at the Paris Opera (Bastille). The same year she had a rapturous reception for her debut at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels singing\nthe title role in LA CALISTO by Cavalli conducted by René Jacobs and directed by Herbert Wernicke. She sang Zerlina at the Teatro Colon and Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi) at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna conducted by Riccardo Chailly. In 1994 she made her debut at Covent Garden as L'Ensoleillad in Massenet's CHERUBIN, she gave a recital at Wigmore Hall and sung Ilia (IDOMENEO) at the Barbican Centre. She also sang at the at Musikverein (Vienna) conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli. Together with Teresa Berganza she made duet recitals in Paris and Metz and was very successful singing Cleopatra from GIULIO CESARE (Handel) with Concerto Köln conducted by René Jacobs. María Bayo started in 1995 with her debut as Juliette (ROMEO ET JULIETTE by Gounod) followed by her appearance at the Teatro Communale di Bologna with Micaela (CARMEN). The same year she could be heard at Salle Gaveau in Paris and at the Monnaie (Brussels), where she was successful in the role of Ilia from Idomeneo. Also important was her debut at the Staatsoper in Vienna where she sang Antonia. The concert she gave with Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia conducted by Victor Pablo was a landmark in Madrid with a large ovation from the public and very good reviews in all the Spanish newspapers. She finished the year singing Giulietta from I CAPULETI E I MONTECCHI by Bellini in Marseille (France). In 1996 she opened at U.N.E.S.C.O Hall in the Year of de Falla with a concert and took part at Midem in Cannes in a concert named "Viva la Zarzuela". She made her debut at Berlin Staatsoper with great success singing LA CALISTO by Cavalli conducted by René Jacobs and repeated this success in Brussels where, also at Téâtre de la Monnaie, she debuted in the role of Mélisande from PELLEAS ET MELISANDE, conducted by Antonio Pappano and staged by Herbert Wernicke. She also made her debut at the Proms in London singing two concerts, one conducted by Rafael Frübeck de Burgos and the other singing arias from GIULIO CESARE conducted by René Jacobs. In August she sang Amina (L'ELISIR D'AMORE) at the "Quincena Musical" in San Sebastián and finished the year with another great success singing for the first time a Zarzuela on stage, DNA FRANCISQUITA at Teatro Colon. In 1997 she sang her first Mimi in Montpellier (France) and also in Tel-Aviv, conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli. In April she sang in GIULIO CESARE at the "Palais Garnier" (Opera de Paris). In May she sang ADINA at the "Grand Theatre de Geneve". In June she was Rosina at the Hamburg State Opera. In July she sang Antigona from the opera by Traetta conducted by Christophe \nRousset. In September she sang MANON in Bilbao. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera (Zerlina) and also appeared for the first time at the Salzburg Festival singing Cherubino. Highlights of forthcoming seasons include her appearance at the opening night of Teatro Liceu, where she will sing Liu (TURANDOT). And another debut brings her to the Houston Opera singing the three roles from LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN.
