Anthony Susan B.
soprano

American soprano Susan B. Anthony's new CD 'Portrait' was recently released on Arte Nova to glowing reviews in Europe. She has just appeared as Senta at the Bastille, Paris, and recently as Sieglinde in Tokyo and in concerts at the Santa Cecilia in Roma (M° Sawallisch). Just prior in Dresden as Senta and in concerts in München and Stuttgart including Strauss' Four last Songs. Last New Year eve she was the soprano soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic in the Beethoven Ninth Symphony, which she also performed in Tokyo under Daniel Barenboim in February. Earlier in the fall she was in Vienna for 'Salome' having performed 'Ariadne' in Paris and Amsterdam with the Vienna Philharmonic (Dohnányi) just prior. In September she had made her New York 'sensational debut' in a new production of 'Fliegende Holländer' - opening of the New York City Opera season. Last summer she performed 'Die irische Legende' in München during their festival. Just prior, as Brünnhilde in 'Siegfried' in Genève, she 'showed why she is the most important of the European sopranos to watch'. She was in Vienna as the Frau just afterward. She also performed the world-premiere, 'K', in Paris and was the Kaiserin and Senta at the Vienna Staatsoper and was the Kaiserin in Barcelona's new production of Frau earlier that season. Summer 2000 saw her first 'emotionally vulnerable, vocally golden' Chrysthemis in Santa Fe Opera's new 'Elektra'. She had triumphs as Bologna's 'Salome' (M° Gatti) and as 'Ariadne' at La Scala (Sinopoli) in spring 2000. She also had performances in Vienna ('Holländer', 'Fidelio'), concerts in Köln and with the Münchner Philharmoniker and was soprano soloist in the Britten War Requiem with Sir Colin Davis in Dresden. In 1999 she was Marie in Köln's 'Wozzeck'; 'Fidelio' in Vienna and 'Frau' and 'Ariadne' in Dresden (conducted by Sir Colin Davis and Giuseppe Sinopoli). She performed the 'Gurrelieder' at the Bard Music Festival in the United States in summer 1999. Her recording of 'Traumgörge' with James Conlon for EMI was released last spring.

Other recent appearances have included Elsa in 'Lohengrin' at the Opera de Paris, Bastille as well as at the Vienna Staatsoper. She debuted as Ariadne in a new production in Dresden under Sir Colin Davis televised 'live' throughout Europe in 1999. She performed Senta in Oslo, was seen as Leonore in 'Fidelio' at the Berlin Staatsoper and in concert performances in the Beethoven 'Missa Solemnis' in Paris (M° Sawallisch). In summer 1998 she appeared in Vienna as Leonore in 'Fidelio'-televised 'live' throughout Europe. In 1997-98 she appeared in a new production of Beethoven's Leonore in Lausanne and the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris and appeared in Vienna as Elsa in 'Lohengrin' to great acclaim. Earlier in 1997 she was Leonore in the season-opening production of 'Fidelio' at the Colon, Buenos Aires. Born and raised in Michigan, Ms. Anthony has won acclaim in leading theaters throughout Europe including: La Scala, Berlin Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper München, Teatro dell'Opera Roma, Teatro La Fenice, La Monnaie Brussels, Montpellier, Hamburg, Dresden, Vienna and the Bastille in Paris. Opernwelt named her 'Singer of the Year' in 1995 for her Maria in Strauss' 'Friedenstag' in Dresden. She was again Singer of the Year for 1997 for her portrayal of Genièvre in the seldom-performed Chausson Opera, 'Le Roi Arthus' in Köln.

Other significant appearances have included Strauss' 'Guntram' at the Festival de Radio France, Montpellier, and 'Le Roi Arthus' at the Bregenzer Festspiele. Equally comfortable in concert and recital, Ms. Anthony has performed with Maestri: Pierre Boulez, James Conlon, Sir Colin Davis, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Gisueppe Sinopoli and Wolfgang Sawallisch.

This summer she performs 'Salome' with the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. In future seasons she has 'Frau' in Vienna and Dresden and new productions at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, Washington, Barcelona and two in Tokyo. She will sing Senta again next year in Madrid with M° Barenboim.
