basso

Simone Alaimo was born in Villabate (Palermo) where he studied literature and music. After winning a competition for two years (1977-78 and 1978-79) he attended the specialisation course for young opera singers at La Scala, Milan. In 1978, he made his lead debut for AS.LI.CO in Donizetti's opera 'Don Pasquale'. He has won the top award in numerous international competitions including: Voci Verdiane (Busseto 1977), Achille Peri (Reggio Emilia 1978), Toti dal Monte (Treviso 1979) and Maria Callas (RAI 1980). He has diligently taken part in all major Italian festivals such as Martina Franca and Pesaro. He has sung in all the most important theatres in Italy and abroad from La Scala to the Metropolitan where he already has contracts until the year 2000. He has already performed in more than 80 operas in a repertory ranging from the 18th century through Verdian romanticism to contemporary music. Under the guidance of Maestro Celletti, he has specialised in Belcanto, particularly in the great Rossinian roles, becoming one of the world's leading bass baritones. Simone Alaimo has received numerous artistic tributes as best actor for Donizetti roles in unusual operas such as 'Torquato Taso', 'Esule di Roma', 'Convenienze teatrali' and 'Roberto Devereux'. He has made numerous recordings including 'Orazi e Curiazi', 'le astuzie femminili', 'Don Giovanni', 'Il Barbiere di Siviglia', 'Il Turco in Italia', 'La Cenerentola', 'Ermione' 'L'Italiana in algeri', 'Zaira', 'Le Convenienze teatrali', 'Maria Stuarda', Torquato Tasso', 'L'esule di Roma', 'I Masnadieri', 'Luisa Miller', 'L'Ebreo', 'Crispino e la comare', 'Petite messe solennelle', 'Messa di Milano', 'Poliuto' and 'Tre ore dell'agonia'. He has also recorded a collection of Rossini and Verdi arias for bass. Commitments for the near future include his debut in Seville as 'Falstaff', which he will then record for Philips together with 'L'Elisir d'Amore' in Lyon with Video and CD-recording and in Catania. In 1997 he will return to the Metropolitan with 'Le Nozze di Figaro' then 'Axur' in Verona and 'Cavalleria rusticana' in Bologna.
