Graham Clark was born in Lancashire, England. From 1964 he was a Director of Physical Education in three schools, which he followed with a Masters in Management and four years as a Senior Regional Officer with the Sports Council before he made his professional operatic debut with Scottish Opera in 1975.

He was a Principal of English National Opera from 1978 to 1985 (over 150 performances in 16 roles) and has also sung with the Royal Opera Covent Garden, Opera North and Welsh National Opera in the UK.

He has had an extensive international career since 1976, including:

a) 13 seasons and over 100 performances at the Bayreuther Festspiele (Loge and Mime, Der Ring des Nibelungen - two productions; David, Die Meistersinger; Steuermann, Der fliegende Holländer; Melot and Seemann, Tristan und Isolde). 1981 - 1992 and 2001

b) 13 seasons at The Metropolitan Opera, New York (Loge and Mime, Der Ring des Nibelungen; Bégearss, The Ghosts of Versailles - world première; Captain Vere, Billy Budd; Steva, Jenufa; Herodes, Salome; Hauptmann, Wozzeck - two productions; Gregor, The Makropulos Case; Prinz/Marquis, Lulu; Tanzmeister, Ariadne auf Naxos). 1985 - 2001

c) many performances in Paris (Châtelet, Bastille and Champs Élysées), Vienna, Milan La Scala, Berlin (Deutsche Staatsoper and Deutsche Oper), Salzburg, Hamburg, Munich, Zurich, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Brussels, Rome, Turin, Catania, Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Aix en Provence, Nice, Toulouse, Toronto, Vancouver, Stockholm, Bonn, Matsumoto, Tokyo and Yokohama. 1976 - 2002

d) over 300 Wagner performances including over 200 performances of Der Ring des Nibelungen. 1977 - 2002.

Graham has recorded with Decca, Philips, EMI, Sony, Erato, Teldec, The Met, EuroArts, BMG and the BBC. He has made several videos including: The Makropulos Case (Canadian Opera, Toronto); The Ghosts of Versailles (The Met, New York); Die Meistersinger, Der fliegende Holländer, Der Ring des Nibelungen (Bayreuther Festspiele) and Wozzeck (Deutsche Staatsoper, Berlin and The Met, New York).

He has sung with many of the world's main orchestras including in festivals at Berlin, Brussels, Paris, Rome, Chicago, Milan, Amsterdam, Cologne, Copenhagen, Tel Aviv, Lucerne, Antwerp, Edinburgh and the London Proms.

He has received three nominations for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Opera" Awards, including an American Emmy. He won the Sir Laurence Olivier Award in 1986 for Mephistopheles in Busoni's Doktor Faust. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters, Loughborough University, in 1999.

His plans include: Der Ring des Nibelungen in Bayreuth, Berlin, Barcelona, Catania, Amsterdam and Tokyo; Boris Godunov in Geneva; Wozzeck for the Royal Opera Covent Garden and in Aix en Provence; The Makropulos Case in Amsterdam; and Hänsel und Gretel for the San Francisco Opera.@
