In 2008 the tenor Mario Zhang, outstandingly celebrated by the press for his “heroicly coloured voice with all the necessary lyrism” (Der neue Merker) made his successful debut as CALAF at the German Opera Berlin, at the Semper Opera Dresden as well as at the Vienna Popular Opera. For this role he had already earned enormous praise at the Zurich Opera House and at the National Opera of Bratislava, where he also personified MANRICO in the ‘Il Trovatore’ production on the occasion of the opening of the new Bratislava National Opera. Besides, his interpretation of DON CARLO at the International Music Festival in Chiemgau was hailed both by press and audience.
At the Welsh National Opera, the Wexford Opera, the Royal Opera Copenhagen, the National Opera Prague, the Polish National Opera, the Cologne Opera, in Dublin, Hanover, Kiel, at the Festival in Schwerin, at the Cleveland Opera, the Sacramento Opera, the Sarasota Opera, the Canadian Opera Company , the Pacific Opera Victoria and the Vancouver Opera the artist can be seen in such operas as ‘Rigoletto’, ‘La Traviata’, ‘Aida’, ‘La Bohème’, ‘Tosca’, ‘Carmen’ ‘Les Contes d’Hoffman’ and many others.
Mario Zhang, who is a Canadian citizen, performed as a concert soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Welsh National Radio Orchestra.
The young tenor graduated at the London Royal College of Music, before winning the first prize at the National Clonter Opera Competition in London. Furthermore he was a finalist at the Placido Domingo International Opera Competition and the Metropolitan Opera Competition.
Televised performances of the artist include among others a production of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and a opera gala concert with the Welsh National Radio Orchestra.
One of his most interpreted parts is RADAMES, which he sang among others in a huge AIDA production in Paris, in Marseille, Brussels, Lisbon, Budapest, Stuttgart, Dortmund and in a new production at the Eutin Festival, at the Munster Municipal Theatre, the National Opera of Bratislava, the National Opera and the Prague State Opera.
In the season 08/09 he gained huge successes as DON JOSE at the Semper Opera Dresden, as CAVARADOSSI and RADAMES in Prague and Bratislava, as RODOLFO at the International Music Festival Chiemgau and in a gala concert with the Munich Symphony Orchestra at the ‘Brunnenhof’ in Munich…
2009/2010 Mario Zhang will sing a.o. Calaf at the Vienna Popular Opera and the Weimar National Opera and Hoffmann at the Wroclav Opera. Besides, he will debute as Alvaro in ‘La forza del destino’ at the Schwerin Festival.
