This is his 51st Season conducting The Royal Opera. Born in Birmingham, he studied with Hermann Scherchen. He has had a 34-year relationship with the BBC Philharmonic, first as its Chief Guest Conductor, the Principal Conductor until 1991 and now Conductor Emeritus.

In 1970 he became Music Director of Australian Opera and conducted 'War and Peace' to open the Sydney Opera House. His radio broadcasts include complete performances of 'Rienzi', 'Die Feen' and 'Das Liebesverbot'. He orchestrated and gave the world premiere of Prokofiev's 'Maddalena'.

He has been honoured by three music colleges and five universities, as well as receiving the Laurence Olivier, Evening Standard, Critic's Circle and Royal Philharmonic Society Awards. He became a CBE in 1986 and was knigthed in 1991.
