Levin Ira
direttore d'orchestra

Ira Levin was born in Chicago and began piano lessons at the age of 10. Two years later he was admitted to Northwestern University School of Music under the tutelage of Donald Isaak. From the ages of 18 to 26 he studied piano at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Jorge Bolet, and worked as his teaching assistant. Also at Curtis, Mr. Levin studied conducting with Max Rudolf and chamber music with Mischa Schneider and Felix Galimir.

At the age of 20, Mr. Levin was the first-prize winner of the American National Chopin Competition. He has concertized throughout the United States, South America, and Europe; and he has made radio and television appearances in Philadelphia, NY, Miami, Caracas, Edinburgh (BBC), Warsaw, and Lucerne (where he performed the Busoni Piano Concerto in 1991). He continues to appear in recital, performing works in every classical genre.

Since the age of 26, Mr. Levin has conducted opera and symphonic concerts throughout Europe, including appearances as conductor/soloist in works of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. He has conducted some of the leading orchestras of Europe, including the Dresden Staatskapelle, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Frankfurt Museum Orchestra and the Düsseldorf Symphony. His operatic repertoire consists of over 60 operas, including the major works of Mozart, Verdi and Wagner, as well as rarely heard works by Busoni, Martin, Pfitzner and Braunfels. His symphonic repertoire likewise includes most of the standard repertoire as well as many lesser-known works.

He has conducted often on very short notice, in opera as well as concert, without rehearsal, to great critical acclaim. In January of 2001 he conducted Richard Strauss' complete 'Bürger als Edelmann' at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf, narrated by Sir Peter Ustinov. In September of 2001, after conducting two concerts, he was chosen to be the new musical director of the Theatro Municipal and the Municipal Orchestra in Sao Paulo, Brazil, beginning in March of 2002. In March of 2002 he made his highly successful debut at the Semper Opera , during the Dresden Opera Festival, conducting 'Tristan und Isolde' on a few hour's notice and with no rehearsal. He was then invited back by the Semper two days later to conduct 'Die Frau Ohne Schatten', again without rehearsal and with great success. He has worked with many of the leading singers and stage-directors of Europe.
