Janice Baird is today one of the leading dramatic sopranos worldwide. Internationally praised as an extremely gifted and intelligent singing actress, Miss Baird´s combination of vocal prowess and sensitivity as well as expressive acting makes the attractive artist one of the most powerful und intensely charismatic performers on the operatic stage.
Janice Baird was born on Manhattan's Upper West Side just steps away from Lincoln Center in a musically influenced family. Since her parents were both professional singers she naturally studied music, transverse flute and singing in her hometown. From early on she
loved the stage and so she additionally studied acting at the HB Actors Studio in Manhattan.
Miss Baird started her career as dramatic mezzo-soprano first in the US and then in Europe. Here she continued her language studies and she perfected in the respective countries her German, Italian, French and Spanish. Meanwhile she´d started to sing soprano roles and quickly moved on – inspired by master classes with Birgit Nilsson and intensive private study with Astrid Varnay – to the hochdramatische repertoire. Therewith she started her major international career its pillars still being the great Wagner and Strauss heroines.
She sang BRÜNNHILDE with Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Massimo Bellini Catania, Deutsche Oper Am Rhein Düsseldorf, Grand Théâtre Du Genéve, Operan Göteborg, Kongelige Teater Kopenhagen, Théâtre Municipal de Marseille, Opera Seattle, Kungliga Operan Stockholm, Teatro De La Maestranza Sevilla, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Théatre Du Capitole Toulouse, Teatro La Fenice Venezia and Opernhaus Zürich.
She sang ISOLDE with Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, Deutsche Oper Am Rhein Düsseldorf, Staatsoper Hamburg, Metropolitan Opera New York, Teatro Dell´Opera Roma, Théâtre Du Capitole Toulouse and Opernhaus Zürich.
She sang ORTRUD with ABAO Bilbao and Semperoper Dresden.
She sang ELEKTRA with Deutsche Oper Berlin, ABAO Bilbao, Teatro Massimo Bellini Catania, Semperoper Dresden, Oper Essen, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Opera Nantes, Teatro Massimo Palermo, Teatro Dell`Opera Roma, Salzburger Festspiele, Teatro De La Maestranza Sevilla, Kungliga Operan Stockholm, Operá Du Rhin Strasbourg, Théâtre Du Capitole Toulouse and Opernhaus Zürich.

Furthermore she sang TURANDOT with Greek National Opera Athena, Teatro de la Maestranza Sevilla and Operá du Rhin Strasbourg , MINNIE/LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST with Teatro Dell`Opera Roma and Teatro de la Maestranza Sevilla, MARIE with Teatro Dell`Opera Roma and LADY MACBETH with Staatsoper Berlin and Teatro de Bellas Artes Mexiko City.
Miss Baird worked with conductors such as Marc Albrecht, Christoph von Dohnany, Daniele Gatti, Michael Gielen, Bernhard Haitink, Armin Jordan, Philippe Jordan, James Levine, Fabio Luisi, Franz Welser-Möst, Kent Nagano, Donald Runnicles, Peter Schneider, Jeffrey Tate, Sebastian Weigle and Simone Young - in productions of directors such as Robert Carsen, Claus Guth, Nicolas Joel, Peter Konwitschny, Martin Kusej, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Giancarlo del Monaco, David Pountney and Bob Wilson.
Her recent huge successes were ELEKTRA with Salzburger Festspiele, Catania and Deutsche Oper Berlin; FÄRBERIN with Opernhaus Zürich; TURANDOT and MINNIE at Teatro Dell’Opera Roma Opera Sevilla; BRÜNNHILDE with Opernhaus Zürich, Opera Seattle and Deutsche Oper Berlin; MARIE/Wozzeck with Teatro Dell’Opera Roma, SALOME at Maggio Musicale Firenze and ISOLDE with Oper Düsseldorf, Opernhaus Zürich and the Metropolitan Opera New York.
Miss Baird’s upcoming engagements include among others ELEKTRA with Wiener Staatsoper and Oper Leipzig as well as BRÜNNHILDE in „Der Ring des Nibelungen“ with Deutsche Oper Berlin and Opéra National De Paris.
As an American who was raised and studied both in Europe and America, Ms. Baird speaks German, English, Italian, French and Spanish and currently lives in Berlin, Germany and in Andalucía, Spain.
