In 1979 Stefano Vizioli obtained degrees in piano and operatic staging and directed his first opera, L'impresario delle Canarie by Domenico Sarro at the Barga Opera Festival.

After his initial successes, in 1986 he staged a new production of Madama Butterfly for the Teatro Comunale of Bologna at the Ravenna Festival. The production was such a great success that it still in use, and re-staged in Bologna, Genova, Reggio Emilia, Trieste, Venezia , Parma and Cagliari. In 1988 his Manon Lescaut opened the season of the Teatro São Carlos in Lisbon.

One of Stefano Vizioli's great interests is to find unknown works from past and 20th century composers. He directed two new opera's by Paolo Arcà: Angelica e la luna at the Aterforum in Ferrara (1985) and Il carillon del gesuita at the Fermo Festival in 1989. In the same year he also staged a double bill featuring Il giuoco del barone by Valentino Bucchi and Giovanni Sebastiano by Gino Negri at the Teatro Comunale of Firenze , where he returned the following year for Menotti's Il telefono and Pubblicità, ninfa gentile by Gino Negri.

His career brought him to the principal Italian and foreign theatres such as Teatro alla Scala (Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream, with the puppet theatre of Gianni and Cosetta Colla and the set designed by the painter Luigi Veronesi in 1991; a new production of Don Pasquale in 1994 with Riccardo Muti), the Teatro dell'Opera in Roma (Offenbach's La Belle Hélène in 1994; L'elisir d'amore with sets by Ugo Nespolo in 1995 in coo-production with the Opéra Royal de Wallonie of Liege, the Opéra Comique of Paris and the Théâtre Municipal of Lausanne), the Teatro La Fenice in Venezia (La sonnambula in 1996 also staged in Warsaw), the Teatro Comunale of Ferrara (Il barbiere di Siviglia in 1994 with Claudio Abbado), the Ravenna Festival (Norma in 1994 with Riccardo Muti), the Teatro Verdi of Trieste (opening of the 1991/92 season with L'italiana in Algeri in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Rossini; Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 1992; Die Zauberflöte in 1993; La cenerentola and Il turco in Italia in 1994; Tristan und Isolde in 1995; Don Carlos in 1997), the Landestheater of Salzburg (Don Carlos in 1997), the Teatro São Carlos in Lisbon (La Bohème in 1996, Puccini's Trittico in 1997), the Théâtre Municipal of Lausanne (Il barbiere di Siviglia in 1997; L'elisir d'amore in 1998), the Teatro Municipal of Santiago del Chile (Rigoletto in 1997), the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg (Don Carlos in 1997), the Garsington Festival (Il turco in Italia in 1996, la pietra di Paragone in 1998) and the Wexford Festival (La parisina in 1996).

Stefano Vizioli has also dedicated himself to projects for young artists such at the Teatro Sperimentale of Spoleto (La sonnambula in 1989), the Teatro Verdi of Pisa (L'incoronazione di Poppea in 1993), the As.Li.Co. (Die Zauberflöte in 1990; Il turco in Italia in 1992), and at the "Bottega" of the Teatro Comunale of Treviso (La sonnambula in 1993), Amahl and the night visitors and The Devil and DanielWebster(OPERALABORATORIO di Palermo 2000).

University of Cincinnati - Conservatory of Music invited in july 2001 Stefano Vizioli to have a stage on 'Don Giovanni' by Mozart.@Recently have made follows productions: Don Pasquale to Bologna, Norma and Ballo in Maschera al Teatro São Carlos di Lisbona, Nabucco at Chorégies d'Orange, of the Barbiere di Siviglia to Cagliari and Valladolid, of the Cenerentola to Milano, and the Nozze istriane di Smareglia to Teatro Verdi di Trieste, of Norma al Teatro San Carlo to Napoli, of Tancredi to Sassari and of the Turco in Italia to Pisa. There are new productions about the Cenerentola and Italiana in Algeri to Philadelphia, that had make his debut in USA, Il Barbiere di Siviglia to Théâtre des Champs Elysées of Paris and at the Opera of Baltimora ,the prime italian of Notte di Maggio by Rimsky Korsakov to Teatro Comunale of Bologna, Tancredi to Teatro Malibran of Venezia, Don Pasquale to Teatro dell'Opera to Cagliari and at Teatro Calderon of Valladolid, Madama Butterfly at Opera di Montpellier and Lucia di Lammermoor at Festival of Saint Louis.

Stefano Vizioli had made a full radioshows for Rai making creation and conduction of programs like Pomeriggio Musicale, Le Ore della Musica, Di tanti palpiti, La Penna e lo Scettro- letterary activity by Caterina di Russia -Un critico musicale del Settecento: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He had made collaboration with RAISAT for creation and realisation of program Banchetto Musicale, voyage eno-gastronomic inside Opera.

Next productions by Stefano Vizioli: Madama Butterfly at Comunale di Bologna and a new production of american composer Dominick Argento Casanova's Homecoming at Chiostro di San Micheletto.
