He studied at the Franz Liszt College of Music in Weimar and with Helene Jung. His debut took place in 1961 at the Landestheater of Thuringia in Gera as Dr.Cajus in Die lustige Weiber von Windsor" by Nicolai and as Don Fernando in Fidelio. He was a member of the Landestheater of Saxony in Dresden-Radebeul from 1954 to 1966, and of the National Theatre in Weimar from 1966 to 1970. He joined the Leipzig Opera House from 1970 to 1983 and appeared often as a guest. He was a permanent guest at the Dresden State Opera. He made guest appearances at the National Opera of Sofia and at the Leningrad Opera House. The highlights of his stage repertoire were dramatic roles such as Scarpia, Pizarro, Alfio, Tonio, Coppelius, and Jochanaan. On 31 May 1969 he took part in the world premiere of Griechische Hochzeit [A greek wedding] by Hanell at the Leipzig Opera House. In 1982, he appeared as a guest in Reggio, Emilia and began an important world career. He sang Kurwenal at the Lausanne Festival (1983) and Telramund at the Berlin State Opera (1983). In 1975, he took part in yet another world premiere : Der Schatten [The Shadow] by Fritz Geissler. He became a member of the Berlin State Opera in 1983. He sang Kaspar in Der Freischütz at the opening of the rebuilt Semper Opera in Dresden on 13 February1985. He appeared at the Bayreuth Festival as Kurwenal (1986), as Telramund (1987-91,1993), as Biterolf in Tannhäuser (1992-93,1995) and as Alberich (1994-96). He had great success at the Munich State Opera as Jochanaan and as Alberich. The latter was his debut role at Covent Garden Opera (1988) and at the Metropolitan Opera (1989) where he was also to be heard as Amfortas. He sang Pizarro in Chicago and Philadelphia in 1988. That same year, he repeated his Alberich at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, and in 1992 in a concert version of The Ring at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, as well as at Covent Garden (1994-95) and in Götterdämmerung at the Oslo Opera House (1996). He made guest appearances at the Opera Houses of Ljubljana and Bratislava. He has been a member of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich since the 1993-94 season. He sang Pizarro at the Hamburg State Opera (1995), the Holländer and Telramund in Dresden (1995), Kaspar at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (1995). He became well known as a concert and oratorio singer. He took part in a recording of Fidelio for USSR Television. Recordings : Eterna, Philips (Tristan und Isolde, Der Freischütz.
