| Nello Santi joined the Met in 1962 conducting 'Un ballo in Maschera', and has since led more than 300 performances of 19 works with the company, including 'Francesca da Rimini', 'Madama Butterfly', 'Luisa Miller', 'Manon Lescaut', 'La Gioconda', 'Lucia di Lammermoor', 'Tosca', 'Aida', 'Il Trovatore', and 'Turandot'. Born in Adria, Italy, he is principal conductor of Italian repertoire at the Zurich Opera, music director of Basel's Swiss Radio Orchestra, and principal guest conductor of Tokyo's Yomuiri Nippon Symphony. He appears regularly at La Scala, Vienna State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, and Bavarian State Opera, and in recent seasons has conducted 'Nabucco' and 'I due Foscari' in Zurich, 'Simon Boccanegra' at the Norwegian National Opera, 'Rigoletto' and 'Aida' at the Arena di Verona, 'La Traviata' in Venice, and the Verdi Requiem at the Vatican. This season at the Metropolitan he conducts performances of 'Rigoletto' and 'La Bohème'; upcoming in Zurich in 2001 is a new production of 'Otello'. |
