Nielsen Inga
soprano

Inga Nielsen, born in Denmark of Danish-Austrian parents, made her first recordings with Columbia Records at the age of nine singing Danish folk songs and Christmas carols.

After finishing her studies in Vienna, Stuttgart and Budapest, she began her career in opera houses of Germany and Switzerland, later becoming a member of the Frankfurt Opera. Now a free-lance singer, she performs at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala/Milano, Covent Garden/London, as well as at the opera houses of Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Paris, Zürich, New York and Buenos Aires. She has also sung at the festivals of Bayreuth, Munich, Aix-en-Provence, Edinburgh, as well as the Holland and Athens Festivals and the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York. Karajan invited her to Salzburg, to perform and record PARSIFAL (DGG).

Milestones in Inga Nielsen's career have been the new productions of DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL in the role of Konstanze at the Salzburg Festival, and at Covent Garden under the baton of Sir Georg Solti. Both productions have been televised internationally and are available on video. In Zurich she made her role-debut as Agathe in the new production of DER FREISCHÜTZ (directed by Ruth Berghaus) and later sang Leonore/FIDELIO there. Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducted both productions and chose her for his recordings of IL RE PASTORE by Mozart (Teldec) and SIEBEN LETZTE WORTE UNSERES ERLÖSERS AM KREUZE by Haydn (Teldec).

With the new Leipzig production of SALOME in the fall of 1994 (stage director: Nikolaus Lehnhoff, conductor: Jiri Kout) Inga Nielsen made her breakthrough in the dramatic repertoire. Her Salome was internationally acclaimed in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna, Amsterdam, Naples and Santa Fe; her recording of this opera received several awards and was nominated 'CD of the Year' by the magazine 'Opernwelt'.

A further landmark is her portrayal of Ursula in MATHIS DER MALER at Covent Garden in a Peter Sellars production, conducted by Esa-Pekka-Salonen. She sang Chrysothemis in ELEKTRA in Japan with Giuseppe Sinopoli. She also performed this role in San Francisco, Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Dresden, Berlin, Amsterdam and in Paris under the baton of Daniel Barenboim. In 1994 Inga Nielsen sang the Marschallin in DER ROSENKAVALIER at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen followed by TOSCA in 1997 and MADAMA BUTTERFLY. Her Butterfly, Tosca and Norma (Conductor: Michael Gielen) have been recent successes at the Berlin State Opera, as well as the Empress in DIE FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN at the Semperoper Dresden and at La Scala under the baton of Giuseppe Sinopoli.

Further career landmarks are Elsa in LOHENGRIN, her first Wagnerian role, directed by Peter Konwitschny, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher at the Hamburg State Opera, (this was also the team for her appearance as Jenny in AUFSTIEG UND FALL DER STADT MAHAGONNY). 1999 she debuted as Elisabeth in TANNHÄUSER (with Peter Seiffert and Thomas Hampson) at the Zurich Opera. Her most recent success was Die Frau in Arnold Schönbergs ERWARTUNG at Covent Garden as well as at the Cincinnati Opera and Senta in DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER at the Hamburg State Opera.

In addition to her opera engagements Inga Nielsen maintains an equally busy schedule performing concerts and recitals. In 1993 she appeared with Placido Domingo in a nationally televised opera concert in Copenhagen.

She also participates often in radio and TV productions and has numerous recordings such as a solo album conducted by Antonio Pappano, solos in Helmut Rillings complete recording of Bach cantatas, OBERON/Rezia, Marek Janowski (BMG), Zemlinsky's GEBURTSTAG DER INFANTIN (Koch-Schwann), ROSE PILGERFAHRT by Schumann with Gustav Kuhn (Chandos). Her recording of FIDELIO (Naxos) in 2000 was part of the list of the 'Ten best opera recordings of the Year' presented by 'Opera News'. In 1997 EMI Classics released a CD entitled SONG OF LOVE with Inga Nielsen and Robert Hale singing love songs from Broadway musicals.

In 1992 Inga Nielsen was honored by the Queen of Denmark with the Order of the Dannebrog, equivalent of the English 'Dame' and in 1998 with the title "Kammersängerin".
